Info. Wanted Midland Skiffs built in Rhode Island

I am restoring a 1978 Midland Fiberglass Skiff. It was built in Coventry Rhode Island. The company went out of business in the early 90's. I have attached photos of the boat.

The previous owner removed the "punky deck, internal gas tank and console". He added additional cross members and a installed a new self draining deck. I am looking for information about the boats. Specs, suggested HP, etc.

I have a 1980 19' Midland that I recently purchased. I have not had it in the water but the previous owner said that the 100 hp Johnson on it was more than enough power. I am replacing the transom at this time as it was a little soft, I had the motor off to work on the trim and tilt and it seemed like a good time to get it all done.

The USCG plate on mine shows a Max or 140HP, Max persons of 1550 lbs and a total Max of persons and motor of 2600 obs, it is dated 25 April 1975

Thanks for the info on Midlands. Mine turns out to be a '78. The transom was rebuilt somewhere along the line. The deck was recently replaced as it was punky. Will you be replacing the 100 HP? If so, what HP? Did I read that this Midland made it down to VA?

Im in Norfolk VA, bought the boat off Ebay for $750.00 for the boat motor and trailer, they were in Rye NY, the boat was registered in Ct. I plan to use the 100 Johnson, i found a parts motor for $200 with a rebuilt lower unit and good trim and tilt, new stator coils etc. It was rebuilt and the first time they used it, it melted a piston and cylinder so they gave up and bought a new motor, I put my powerhead on it, now all i need is a transom to put it on.

iv had my 20' midland skiff from mold to now, they were build by a family member of ours named al wilcox's. mine was made in the 80's and was the first out of the mold so we layed the glass nice and thick, also had 6 stringers for a 6' beam. this boat is a work horse and love how i can get into some skinny water real easy. my boat was passed down from my dad which used it in rhode island for bull rakeing now its down in the keys and i use it for a bay boat doing backcountry fishing.

I hired a "boat builder" to do necessary restoration work on mine. He kept it for five months and did nothing. At the end of July I took the boat back and sold it in the fall. It will be used for crabbing on Chesapeake Bay.

I just redid this 18ft.. I've been on this site from time to time over the past year. I happened to see this regarding Midland boats. I have a midland 19 CC that has been in the family since 1985. After all that time I'm finally putting it up for sale, so let me know if interested. I've always like the boat, and have had years of fun on it. These days I have a 2003 Suzuki DF90 4 stroke. It's a great fishing machine. I'm finally moving up to a bigger boat. Good to see there are a few more out there.

I run a 1976 Midland 18 - 100 hp Johnson is plenty for this boat - goes on plane at approx 1/2 throttle - I used the Eastern model as a reference - seems to be similar design.

Here are pics of my Midland after a full restoration since March...
I've used it four times now in the open ocean around Boothbay Harbor, Maine. I'm loving everything about it so far but that 90hp Johnson sure likes her gasoline!
If you need a well built steel trailer (custom built to your boat), call the NorthLander Trailer Company in Machiasport, Maine. They do a great job at VERY reasonable prices. I had this one custom built for my Midland for only $1650.

I purchased a Midland 19 about 8 years ago. It was a pretty sad case... rotted transom and sole, blown outboard and a marginal trailer. The owner wanted too much for it but I took it anyway. The lines of this hull are just too beautiful!
I put in a new marine ply transom, replaced the stringers and floors and glassed in a new sole. The boat is a 1975, so I found a 1977 Johnson 140 and had a shop in Ct. rebuild it for me. I don't have a speedometer hooked up, but my GPS says it is running at 40 MPH. It has been a great boat for Striper fishing and just cruising around. Yeah it bangs through chop if you don't throttle back, but the shallow draft is a nice asset. I'm planning to pick up a larger boat, but I already feel this one will be hard to part with.

Tomo.. Great boat and very impressed with the 40 mph!.. what do you have for fuel on that boat?.. I just started a forum..www.downeastboatforum.com.. there you can see the complete rebuild of mine.. there is another guy on there already who has a 19 midland skiff so maybe we can share some ideas.. I would love to build these things if I could get a hold of the mold..thanks for the post
