NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Brass is NO GOOD!!!! It has zinc in it, and we all know what zinc does, right? It must be bronze or stainless, preferrably bronze. The ones with the "grills" will work just fine.

Which way are the 'grills' supposed to face? I've seen them both ways, even on the same boat. Sam

The grill should face foreward to feed the pump while underway, backwards will pull a suction.
