Hull or hull & deck broke apart during 40-50 mph turn

Happened to see this on the "local" news tonight - don't have any details or even know what boat this was, but I'm curious to hear what went wrong:
Quote:
Antrim County's marine officer is investigating a weekend boating accident that left a speedboat in two pieces. The crash happened around 9:00 PM Saturday night, about 400 yards offshore, on the east side of Torch Lake.

Witnesses say the boat was going 40-50 miles per hour when it made a left turn. That's when the top of the boat separated from the hull.

Monday, salvage crews worked to recover both pieces. Antrim County Sheriff's Deputy, Tim Tilley, says, "We had a barge go down and our divers floated it up with bags and we towed it down here. Now we'll have a crane lift it out and put it on a trailer."

Once the boat is out of the water, detective Tilley will get a chance to take a closer look and hopefully find out why the boat broke apart.

A couple of years back, I watched a family friend come hurtling up the river in his lightweight (kevlar etc) and very expensive new ski race boat. At about 70mph they hit the small wake from a passing boat and the boat completely disintergrated. Luckily neither of the two aboard were seriously injured.
The manufacturer, surprise, surprise didn't want to know anything about it. "They had built many such boats before and never had a problem". Most however were of conventional GRP construction. To me it was evidence that you can't simply take an otherwise well engineered boat, change how it is built and expect to end up with something lighter but just as strong.
