Might be worth noting that the irishman John Holland father of the submarine first built a pedal powered submarine before a petrol engined Holland. That original is in a museum in upstate New York somewhere.

Though it is not generally recognized there is a very early submarine built by a Spanish inventor, used wood barrel type of hull, and pedal powered. he spent his life trying to sell the idea to the spanish navy, no one took him seriously and he died in poverty. It is on display in some obscure spanish museum (I have seen pictures of it), it predates all of the better document and more successful designs that came later.

The first submarine ever --it was hand cranked and the movie depicted a most horrendous time inside for the men. If you were to see this movie im sure you would put in question your enthusiasm for going in one.

 

I've seen it in Barcelona, it is on public display in an open area at the Port Vell marina. Looks gorgeous and very technological for it's time. Very carefully made and streamlined, a little gem of woodden shipbuilding. And when you stand close to it, you realize that it is even not that small at all. The guy who invented and made it was definitely one bold thinker.

This is just a comment on homemade subs, not a project or aspiration.

 

I for one, aint real enthusiastic about going underwater!

But those Ideas are very interesting. What would you do if a Gator or a Manatee took an interest in you....

I guess a holster for a good spear would be on the list of highly necessary equipment.

There was another sub with a top, completely enclosing the occupant.
I guy could be down under, out of sight, surrounded by Gators, and no way to yell out; "Help!"

the larger, more modern looking one was built in 1859. hte one above looks more like a "homebuilt" minisub. But I guess subs go back much older than the mid 1800's.

Submarines

The idea of the submarine was mentioned in antiquity there was a covered rowboat that rowed underwater down the Thames from the Tower to Greenwich in 1602 sealed with animal fats. Just believe it but try no reinactment. On the otherhand my great uncle died in the A8 on the 8th June 1905 having done his training in a Holland in 1904 the idea of petrol motors and Elictric motors had not been superseeded then and 15 died when she blew up.
