Fuel Gauge

how do i determine if the problem with a non functioning fuel gauge is a problem with the gauge itself, the sender, or somewhere in between?

Disconnect the sender wire from the sender at the tank. Provide a direct path to ground (a length of wire from the negative side of the battery will do) for this sender wire. Look at the gauge. If the gauge reads full the gauge is okay and the wire is likely okay. Sending units wear out, gauges can last quite a long time without issue, though I've seen a bad one or two. Electric oil pressure and water temperature gauges work the same way, by registering the percentage of ground coming from the sender.
