Fuel In Fresh Water System

We just purchased a 2001 Monterey 282 Cruiser and it seems that the previous owner put gas in the fresh water system. The 2 fills are very close. It has a bad petroleum smell when the tank is low and the taps start to sputter. Any ideas on how to clean the system? Thanks for any help..Billy Austin Texas

YOU POOR BUGGER!!

Try chorine bleach. Flush it several times (untill the gas smell is completely gone or you're unconcious, whichever comes first) with a good strong bleach /water mix (Once most of the chlorine dissipates, it's no more harmful than swimming pool water) Then Water Sweetener. Failing that, rip the tanks out and put new ones in. It's a common problem, and once fuel has been absorbed by the plastic tank and water lines they really are ruined.

P.S. Carl says try a couple of gallons of milk
