Engine-Gear-Prop issue Currently have a 19' flat with a morphed surface drive similar to an Arneson with a cavitation plate. The main use of the boat is shallow running. Running a 280hp 351 Ford, 1.5 Velvet and a 14.5x16 2 blade clover w/ extra heavy cup. The boat can turn 4800 doing about 45knts top end. Looking to improve hole shot in the shallows. Thinking about going to a 1:1 and less agressive prop. Any ideas would be appreciated.

OK general question. Would going from a 1.5 to a 1:1 and less agressive prop in a STERN DRIVE help with hole shot? Thanks for any advice.

I think by laws of physics it would have too. I'd try a new prop (maybe just borrow one?) with less pitch. If you're satisfied with the results, then buy a new one or get your current one re-pitched. I'm thinking it's be wisest to try the easiest solution first, and leave regearing for later if needed. Just watch your tach to not over-rev.

I agree with RockLaker. Try the prop first. Normally,a larger Dia will improve acceleration (holeshot), but at the expense of less Pitch and top end.
