Broaching is comparable to jack-knifing a truck trailer, a sudden heavy application of brakes ( analagous to the retardation of forward motion caused by ploughing the bow into the back of a big wave) on a greasy road has the back wanting to overtake the front, particularly if the resistance to side movement at the rear is compromised by a slippery road, or in a boat not much resistance to side movement by a small underwater hull/rudder profile aft. Both are nerve-wracking ! Deep vees with cutaway forefoots are pretty well broach free, for most practical purposes, although running into the sea, the ride suffers a little.
