Where are all the small 2 strokes in the USA?

I live in Australia and have a yacht in the USA which I am sailing back next year. I am trying to organize a tender and want a 10 foot rib that will plane. So I need decent power but want light weight so a 2 stroke makes sense. In AU I can get a 8-9.8hp Tohatsu or a 8 hp Yammy 2 stroke that weigh in at 26kg the 4 strokes are closer to 40kg for the same power.

Where can I get a 10 hp 2 stroke in the USA? I take it this has something to do with emission laws?

Buy a used 9.9 Evinrude / Johnson. I have one with electric start in a 16' Aluminum Lowe open boat for running around & shallow water work.
The engine is really a FACTORY derated 15 hp to meet the limit of 9.9 hp on many small lakes.
Put it on a 12' boat & you can EASILY back flip it in a breeze.
At 73 I can pull with just 2 fingers & start it everytime on the first pull. Has a remote setup for a good weight distribution.

Cyclops, that derated 15 will weigh around 40kg as opposed to 26.

So is there no way I can order one of these 2 strokes I like?

two-stroke outboard emissions and regulation

The emissions reason: AKA "the bong effect". Australia didn't regulate, relying on expected technical improvements arising from regulation affecting the much larger USA and Euro markets.

Correction on weights

I am 73. I can lift 50 to 60 # of motor & fertilizer with effort.
The 9.9 hp is right at 60 #

Those are 1990 ish weights. New motors BETTER be lighter !!

Rethink your dink? My 9.3 foot dink planes two easily with a merc 3 hp. It's a three sheet design and weighs 84# painted.

No small ones new anymore that I know of.
Just buy an 8hp Yamaha 2 stroke twin. 60lbs.
I have one and it's a very good little engine.
My 6hp 2 stroke Johnson has about the same power.
Just buy used.

Since we are on the subject, I'm 30 weigh 210 pounds and lift weights as a hobby. I can easily lift a the weight of a 15hp outboard above my head. The thing is trying to carry a dingy with said motor up the beach, or taking the motor from the yacht to the dingy and back in rough water will not be easy. If I can get an outboard with the same power and almost half the weight why not? My girlfriend has to be able to handle it too.

I know of the Yamaha 2 stroke 8hp and it is a great motor. If only I can get one.

Check out Google...A company, I believe Canadian, sells seconds hand, nearly new , small outboard motors that are used on freshwater lakes as Camp rental boats. I cant remember the name of the company...

The small 2 cylinder 2 strokes like the Yamaha are fantastic tender engines. Im using a 8 hp Yamaha now. 26kg....and plenty powerful

many sites selling used.

Thanks Michael. I agree that 8 yammy is the perfect tender engine. Light but with enough power to plane with 2 or 3 people.

That website is great. I found a 8hp merc, but it is 34kg which is getting up to the weight of a 4 stroke 9.9 which are around 37kg. Does anyone know if that 8hp merc is a derated higher output engine?

I even found my engine of choice there the Tohatsu 9.8 which is also 27kg. So 1kg more than the yammy 8 for an extra 2hp. This motor is listed everywhere at 59-60lbs and 26-27kg yet this is the pic of the plate on the website? Does this mean the range is from 25-32kg depending on specification - electric start etc?

Also is 120psi good compression for a 2 stroke? My car has 160psi.
