I am running an old Merc 650, 65 horse outboard. I want to hook up a tachometer to monitor engine speed. I know that tach's usually run off of the ignition system, but where do you tap in? What speed can an older outboard run at safely?

you can safely run this older outboard up to 6000 rpm and the tach can hook up to the switch box on the front of the engine right next to the voltage regulater
