Question on Amplifier Assembly I have 1969 55 HP Johnson. Cant get a charge over to the starter. I have power from battery to ignition switch and back to solenoid. Is there a way to test the Amplifier Assemby to determine if it is defective? Thanks in advance!

I am not absoulte on this because i do not want to give u false information! I have the same excate motor but it is a 1968/1969 evinrude. When i first got it it would not turn over and i had power to the ingination switch. What i found is that because of the age of the motor a great many of the wires were no good so i replace each one , one at a time so i didnt have to spend 200$ on a wire harness. So i will try to explain what i Have done to test the power pack and what I have found could be problems that would inhibit the motor from cranking. My first question would be do u have power to the starter? If u do then try re-building the starter, or checking that the brushes in side are good or replacing the starter, but u will find that can be expensive on the older motors, when i couldnt get mine to crank i priced them for around 150$ If u dont have power to the starter then i would say it would be ur soleniod now to test the power pack(amplifier) i can tell u how i did that on mine. but want u to know accoriding to the stuff that read be carfull that the info i give u is correct for ur motor because i guess that even test the power pack can cause probs if down wrong. altho i have not had a prob testing mine even with messing up a few times. Okay on my power pack and motor there are 4 wires coming out of the power pack, one is to the ingination , one is to the breaker points and one is to the coil. the last one i think complete the circuit for the ingination but am not absolte on that. If u use a test light ground on motor and check to the ingination switch first, for me this was a purple/red wire u should have the lite lite when the ingination switch is on. Also u can check that u have power from the pack via the wire that goes to ur breaker points and the wire that is ur tachometer lead in my case the gray one u should get a very low lite as the power should only be .2 amps and when running 1.5-3.0 amps, I know first u have to get the starter working To be honest i think that ur solenoid is bad, due to u saying u have power to the solenoid and cant get a charge over the starter.

Lawrence you were right on the money ! Wires needed replacing and the solenoid was bad. Great response and thank you very very much!
