| Outboard Questions (2 of them) I am confused as to some of the "advice" or "help" I was given, and need some clarification. Facts: I have a 1982 Johnson 150. Question #1: Tilt vs. Trim : Let's say, just as an example, that an outboard will rotate or pitch upward a total of 70 degrees, from full down (vertical) to full up (approaching horizontal). I thought that from full down, to lets say, 30 degrees up, is called Trim. The remaining 40 degrees of rotation toward horizontal is called Tilt. Am I correct in my statements? Question #2: I was also informed by my "advisor", that the throttle I purchased (having a single Tilt/trim? switch on the handle), will not control both the tilt and trim. I have never personally heard of this, let alone seen this. Can any body comment on these questions? |

| In general, with power trim/tilt units on outboards and sterndrives: "Trim" refers to the range of motion that is used to adjust the running attitude of the boat. This is from full down until roughly the point where the engine would be unable to run with the prop in the water. "Tilt" refers to the range of motion used to raise the motor clear of obstacles, or to get it out of saltwater when docked. Even if the engine has power trim, the tilt function is quite often a manual thing. You can't run the motor in this range. Your throttle's trim switch will control the power trim/tilt mechanism through its entire range of travel. That mechanism's range of travel may end before the motor is clear of the water, in which case you have to go back and tilt it up by hand the rest of the way.
