I have a Johson 5.5 Cd10 that runs better than a naked virgin
Oh and they also sell many carb parts too.

May I suggest you buy an electronic ignition module off eBay for about $14 and throw away the points and condenser.

yes and you will need the correct under fly wheel coils and pick up module ..maybe a new flywheel ...$14 oh yes and the rest .....

No. Just uses one of the existing mounting holes. The units are small about 30mm long, 20mm wide and about 6mm thick, they are widely used in lawnmowers etc. The tune up kits for my Johnson, condenser and new points was $11 or $14 for this unit. The points and condenser are removed and this unit takes their place, the original coil is retained. I have the bit of kit on my desk and will fit it tomorrow.

How have they replaced the points that operated from a cam with something else?
Hall effect cam and coil?
Would have to be custom made for the engine

you are talking of a points replacement module then not a CDI switchbox pickup etc...
so can we have the make and part number and possible supplier as I too am in australia and can afford $14

Actually it was $18.29. There was one at $14 but a brand I did not know, The one I have is made by Kawasaki. Check out eBay. If you have a twin cylinder then you have to buy two.

Nup. The flywheel has a magnet and the coil has a pick up, each rotation the magnet passes close to the pickup. The module is wired to the coil. It works just like your old Victa lawnmower. Remember when the old Victas had points and condensors then in the 80's or so switched to "electronic ignition", this is the same set up. All modern outboards use the same setup.

found one for a victor mower at $25 ...what this does is replaces the contacts .it electronically senses when the voltage in the coil has peaked and disconnects the primary hence a spark ...this is for fixed timing magneto systems the original versions of which used contacts.
If your outboard has variable igniton timing ie the contacts are on a movable plate which rotates when you move the trottle then this unit will not work/the timing will be fixed

outboards dont use the same set up they are CDI and have variable ignition timing/more modern being computerised adjusting timing by sensing engine rpm and load....

Looks like it will only work on a flywheel where the magnets are external?

this unit is not a pick up its a replacement for contacts in a magneto system ...Briggs and stratton coils have these built in and do in fact use external magnets

This is from another forum and I am only posting it because you two seem to be having trouble understanding the situation.

Outboard is up and running. Total cost of electronic module is less than set of points and condenser. Nice fat spark. Pulled a two stroke lawn mower down a few days ago. Notice they have a similar unit mounted on the crankcase with extra wires.

Does not get simpler than this.
