just to confirm a rumor that is going around, that some mercury outboards are in fact yamaha outboards with a mercury brand name on them.

why bother when you can rebadge........isn't this greedy little world out to make the most profit from a sale and get away with it......no one gives a f..k about quality and the joy of actually creating something like our fathers did before us... today it is do it as cheap as possible and make as much profit from it as possible, and certainly make sure it doesn't last...accountants hate things that last, so much for their planned obsolescence.....

Depends where.. In here Mercury and Mariner are twin brands like Evinrude & Johnson. And about every 5hp 4stroke outboard in the world (except Honda) are from one factory in China. In addition they are labeled with different hp ratings somewhere (maybe 6) so hence the similarity...

Merc have been using both Tohatsu and Yamaha for 20 years doing various engines.
Generally little ones.
You can usually tell when looking at the powerhead, some look Japanese and some look sensible
Whats new... MerCrusier also made the Lotus 32valve V8 in the Corvette
If you have the production capacity some one will use it

I think my 25 Hp Mariner is a Yamaha. It's a 1997 25M.
It does not say anything on the castings about where its made.

In Malaysia, Mariner below 70 horses are built by Yamaha, anything above that are built by Mercury. But you can still get Mercury built with Mercury name tag for the big capacity engine, the same with Yamaha.

Most manufacturers list their models with hp, weight and engine volume, so it is quite easy to see which engines are identical. Nowadays everything under 25 hp labeled Mercury or Mariner comes from Tohatsu. Under the OEM brand they are cheaper. Nice little engines that live long and require little maintenance, far better than the engines Mercury made. They should buy a better paint though: if you spill fuel on the cover (with integral tanks you can't avoid that), the black paint peels off like a lizard skin.
The original gray Tohatsu paint doesn't have that problem.

One little tip here, the 2 and the 3.5 are exactly the same, there is a restrictive washer behind the carby. Taken out, the 3.5 will make a tinny plane quite well with one 75kg driver.
