Mercury 15 hp 2 stroke - stop button in tiller handle Hi peeps. I am totaly, [well not quite as owned for 1 year] new to these engines. I have a problem, the stop button in the tiller handle has gone short circuit. I need to remove the rubber handgrip to access it. How do I do this and are there any special precautions I should take when doing so ?

normally you just pull the button out and it starts working again ....or cut the wire and put a new modern one elsewhere

Thanks .I took the button out completely, tried putting it back but it will not now shut down the engine, so assume the contacts are burgered. Just wondered if anyone had fixed one. Im a bit of a stickler for having things as they should be ![]()

John. Its a very simple push to make button just 2 contacts in the body of the tiller and a copper? disc that relies on the flexiness [is that a word?] of the rubber to hold it off the contacts. I've cleaned it all up and put it back, but it must be out of line or something as it does not now stop the engine. Another foreseeable problem is that the temperature/humidity here wrecks rubber [a rubber band holding sommat perishes in app 3 months] so I will have to look into an alternative at some time. It is no real problem as there is a main switch on the actual engine. It is useful though as a cut off when docking.

Hi John Thanks for your interest. Very new to this forum so as of yet not figured how to post pics. Realy my only problem is how to get the rubber hand grip off the tiller without causing damage. I have in my "junk box" several types of switch that could serve as a replacement I am an ex Essex boy myself, emigrated here 6 years ago 33 years signalling/telecoms tech with BR so know a "little" LOL about electrics
