Recently whilst dealing with a 40HP Yamaha, there was a problem. The key could fall out of the console whilst in the 'Run' position. Also the motor did not turn off with the key, along with the kill switch also not cutting the motor.
So change key/ignition switch and that works fine, motor starts, runs (without key falling out!) and turns off.

However the kill switch only works when you remove the C clip and press the thing in a bit more. Obviously crackered and will get changed, prior to recommissioning.

Moral is check Kill switches regularly and independent of key, start, run etc problems. Not a problem you want to find out afterwards....
