I Was Told......throw a rod in 150 merc. outboard, pistons are no good

this marine mechanic told me that if you throw a rod in your 150 merc. outboard and rip out half the block, the pistons are no longer good and you basically have to replace not only the block but the whole crank, pistons, rings and rods. is this true or is he trying to take me to the bank. i was considering rebuilding this power head because i want to. he wants me to trade it in on something else so that sh*t looks shady to me. thanks for any feed back TOOCAN

i would not waste ANY time on ANY of the parts
let it go - its done its job and its over

in the late '70's we were involved in ski racing and barefoot water-skiing

i started with a 115 Merc later a 175 Merc and finally my pride and joy a 225 Merc

as you can see i have had good service from Merc's over the years and today i have had my FIVE hp merc for eight years and no ****

we worked a lot on motors in those years
bottom line is, when its over its time to say goodbye

I used a 175 and then a 225 with a 19p

We could pull a 5 1/2 man pyramid with a 17p


Back to post--yes its likely true,--but you can get a short motor, well you used to be able to, thats the block with crank, pistons and head. It may well work out cheaper.

Is that the 150x6 straight, or the V,--either way repairing the block will be costly, if possible.

then again they could "foot" better pissed than me

so as you can see, i have been "troubled" for a flippen looooooong time

fortunately very little has changed over the years
my job is almost done here - my 2 children will finish university in 3 years and then i am off

If the rod breaking, blew a hole in the powerhead then yep, the internal assembly (crank, pistons, etc.) should be suspect and likely are bent, broken, cracked, etc. So, yes, your mechanic is right. To be on the safe side, replace the internal parts. Now technically, you could check dimensions and "run out" of each part to see if they're still "true" then have them checked for cracks, but most often if the rod was stressed to catastrophic failure, then everything else was too, so the parts might look and measure okay, but they die a quick death the next time they're highly stressed.

So, it's up to you. Do you want to put questionable but seemingly good parts back in the powerhead or would you like to be sure it's not going to crap the bed the next hard run it sees?

It's often okay to use the leg portion of the outboard after the powerhead takes a dump. Check the run out on the shaft in case the crank bent before the whole shooting mess came to a smoking stop.

Heh...sounds a little like me. I had one, traded it to my brother for a different one, got another motor for it, traded my motorcycle for another boat, brought home a jon boat for the backyard lake, took in my Dad's old Scanoe, gave the first boat back to my brother, and still have 3 boats! My wife's head is spinning! Woo Hoo!
