Generic outboard measurements

    I'm about to do an i/o transom conversion and it looks like I'm going for the option of keeping as much room inside the boat as possible. This means hanging an outboard on some brackets behind the transom.

    So now looking into brackets, setback and stuff like that. I don't own an outboard yet, so I don't know any measurements. I know it is going to be a longshaft and somewhere in the range of 40 to 100 hp. Are there generic measurement guidelines I can follow? Or do I have to decide which engine it is going to be first?
