flywheel issue i turned the key on my 2003 mercury 40h 2 stroke outboard and absolutely nothing happened. the motor had been running excellent. someone took the cover off and pounded on the flywheel without looking at anything else. pieces of magnets began crumbling and he pulled a piece out. can anyone tell this DAMSELL IN DISTRESS what may have happened here?

Loaded question. Those magnets help generate spark as the flywheel spins, and the spark then ignites the fuel. You are definately going to have to pull the flywheel and replace the damage. Thats doesn't explain the failure to crank in the first place, unless a deteriorated magnet fell and locked up the flywheel. It also sounds like you need a different mechanic to check it out! Mike

Thank you, so much for responding.. yeah, the boat was running great..started on a dime. lots of power and get-up-N-go...when i turned the key and absolutely nothing happened shortly after the previous ride, i kind of thought maybe the control panel/throttle was not registering in the neutral position. he came over and began pounding and i am pretty upset....hildy

Katzcats; Distance yourself immediately from the jackass who pounds on flywheels. The dude is either incompetant or deranged.

Incompetant and deranged mechanics are not good for any particular part of engines. A flywheel should never ever be hit, hitting a magnet or shocking it will reduce its magnetism and therfore its performance. The flywheel should now be removed by by a special tool called 'flywheel puller'. If magnets have become detached from the flywheel as it was running I have to warn you that it is likely that serious damage may have occured.

| There is a label on the flywheel: "DO NOT STRIKE". If some bonehead does the magnets crack. It can be repaired. Remove the flywheel (with the appropiate puller) and get a repair kit. The timing has to be reset after.

I can tell you right away what went wrong with your engine before the dunce hit it with a hammer...it's a Mercury. I had two of them and I will never make that mistake again.
