Very little to choose between outboards today as most are made by Tohatsu or yamaha....its down to price and parts availability down the line and in my wifes case is it the right colour ........

Well in the 60s and 70s most all were made by two sources also ...Mercury or OMC. So what's new?

They are made in Wisconsin, USA. They are state of the art as far as commercially available outboards are concerned. You should check if they are dealers and service shops available in your area. SE Asia is a very large territory.

My good friend has 2 Evinrude 50 E-tecs
here the "three musketeers" are together, we have been mates since high school

now that they are getting to 500 hours they are constantly giving ****
the "experts" come out regularly and plug their computers in and say all ok
20 minutes out on the water the motors will randomly splutter or rev up or even cut out

we cleaned the tanks, clean fresh fuel, new filters, new spark plugs, "serviced" regularly

I am sorry to say, but I have come to the conclusion that E-tec is ****
they were fantastic for the first 2 seasons then is has been trouble ever since
you never know if you will be able to get home

my conclusion is that you should go four stroke

oh and I must add this:

when this "expert" comes to check and service the motors

he charges a fortune

they know that they have you by the nuts and you just have to pay pay pay

these motors dont match up to todays fourstrokes

Many of the new outboards are technically complex. Hard to recommend one. I still prefer the robust, simple two strokes from Yamaha.

Before you choose be sure that locally you have good technical support . Many people speak highly of the Evinrude ETEC, many curse there invention.

In commercial operation I see many motors from Tohatsu, Nissan

Have you checked the plugs for "clocking". They need to be oriented a certain way relative to the direction of fuel coming from the injector. I think the electrode of the spark plug needs to be opposite the injector spray pattern so it is not in between the injector nozzle and the spark. I have a 40hp e-tech. I run 50-1 oil mix (original setting) and the engine has worked perfectly. I bought it as a reaction to contemplating the extreme complexity of my 60hp Suzuki. Once you get past the computer and fuel injection the e-tech is as simple as the old 2 strokes. One special thing I especially like about it is the extremely smooth and controllable throttling at low speeds. Also I like the low gearing (2.67-1) and big propeller. Lots of thrust.

you also love the fact it produces 50% less CO than one of those polluting 4 strokes with much more low to mid range torque
