Diesel outboard

Hi All.

I'm about to bolt a 40 Hp Chinese Runsun diesel outboard to my old fibreglass 1976 17 ft Pride Explorer. As you can already see I don't do anything normal. The boat is just getting a lick of paint and a tidy up and we shall see how the diesel goes. It is replacing an old two smoke Johnson 55 Hp seahorse and I'm praying that it pulls a skier. I've got two young skiers as sons and the boat runs all day costing me a fortune. Supposedly this motor does 3 litres per hour at full noise. Awesome if true, eh? I'll let you know how it goes.

I saw a teenager get pulled up to water ski behind one of these rental pontoon boats at Lake Del Val in CA....with canopy and everything, and just one guy in the boat. Top speed on lake is 10mph, and I'm guessing these RENTAL boats will not go much over that.

Only been waterskiiing once, but IIRC both size of ski/board and weight are major factors.

My guess is you will be able to do everything but 'bare foot', no problems.


Good luck with Chinese engines. I hear their small scooters aren't worth hassle of buying, even for one summer.

Most OB run 5500rpm with a cruise about 4000-4500.

Many diesels will only do 2100-2800 rpm, tho car transplants might work.

Not sure a prop change would get you fast enough?

I looked at a Yanmar diesel OB, there's a company in Scotland who rebuild them for commercial use around the oil industry.

The small one, about 28hp i think cost £12k plus 20% vat.......yes that is not a typo!

Do you have a link for your Chinese manufacturer?

I wonder, though, if it's even legal to use these engines in Europe or North America because of the lack of environmental certification.

Very light at 120kg, same as 60hp petrol/gas OB>
Full revs sounds like 2500, not 4500 revs as stated.

Mine cost about 8k by the time it landed at Hastings. I'd never bought an outboard before but liked the idea of diesel. so mine has a 16" leg. be interesting to see if the motor gets swamped because it is so low.

when I enquired the yanmar 36 Hp was costing $25000 AUD plus freight from UK.
Mine was 8k. it's Chinese so needed a little love before I was happy but I am still so far in front.

what do you mean no gears?

if you watch the video I put it in gear almost immediately after I start the motor. that was the first run of my brand new motor so I didn't feel like giving it everything just yet. Sorry.

I hear you grasshopper. I have a chinese whipper snipper 7 years old now. My 4 year old chinese lawn mower can be started by my wife unlike the briggs and stratton. they were my major influences. And how many of you have maxus, sail, dolphin, or the other brand chinese petrol outboards. do you have stupid problems with them or just the usual outboard hassles?

Chinese scooters- my son took 3 months to bend the motor mount so it throws the chain. had a lot of fun in the meantime.
