40 HP merc troubles It is a 79 Mercury 40 Hp starts and runs fine with the warm up throtle but when shifted into gear the motre bogs and dies. It all started when the fuel pump went out now that is replaced along with the carb rebuilt. Got it running now this. Thinking maybe the coils aren't giving enough fire to run it under load but then again that would be a lot to happen at one time though stranger things have happened. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Chris

Set carbs to 1 1/4 turns. Reeds could be the problem or poor output from the stator.

thanks mazsalleh i read somewhere else to set the carb at 1 1/2 to 2 turns. i checked the coils and found the one firing the top cylinder was not firing so got two new ones but of course the marine company messed up and only gave me one of the right ones. i put it on this evening and it deffinately made a difference i will get the other right one tomorrow hopefully that is if they have one. the big test will be once i get it in the water. I got 2 new reed valves when i got the carb rebuild kit. don't want to put them in unless totally nessicery. thanks for the advice and i will post the results of the "test run" tomorrow night hopefully
