2 stroke tune up?

I am considering purchasing a small 2 hp(forget exactly the horsepower) Evinrude. The engine starts okay and seems to run in the tank pretty well. The owner doesn't know the age but says it is mid 80's. What can I look for to make sure the motor is worth purchasiing for my dink? Should I take it to a mechanic first?

Thanks for any replies.

Jim

Get the Serial Number and I can tell you the age.

If it starts & runs fine that is good. I would see if you coulg get the seller to take a ride with you on your boat with it to see the it shifts fine, can handle a load, etc.
