1988 Mariner 115 question

I have the above on my RIB, and its runs well, but in the last season or two, the starter has not been catching the flywheel with the small impeller. Im sure im not referring to these in the correct language. Basically, when I turn the key, the small impeller that spins up and catches the flywheel is not engaging. It is not missing any teeth, and 'visually' it does no look worn beyond repair - it just seems to need some adjustment. (i think i have this figured out )

Also, i am running a 20 ga tank, with a small fuel pump. When running, then engine will occassionally surge, not more than what feels like a few hundred rpm, but annoying none the less. It occurs most of the time when at moderate to high rpm. Could this be a fuel hose diameter problem? using the stock fuel line than came off a above deck 12ga tank. Any thoughts? Thanks

It's called the Bendix. Most likely it is either worn or corroded. When the starter spins, the inertia of the bendix makes it spin and go up. Try prying it with a bar or screwdriver. If it doesn't move easily it may need replacement.
