8'4" limits you to a crappy boat, one of which the wife would not approve, our primary driver.

On the other hand, in most US states there is no real limit on trailer width, given proper permits. I think 10'0" is a magic number which allows trailering without a follow vehicle and "wide load" banner. I know in CA 8'6" is OK with no permit required, I think 8'6" to 10'0" is doable with special permits bt otherwise no restrictions. Over 10'0" is problematic. That's why you see alot of commerical cruisers are exactly 10'0".

The decision was taken pretty early on that O-1 should be a 'world' boat - ie it should be trailerable without restriction world wide. That limits the width to 2.5m .... 8'4".
I would disagree that this results without question in a 'crappy' boat. Sure we would all prefer a little extra elbow room, but it's one of the constaints that we have to conform to....

Will you have the best design and actually only one ........the power poll suggests
diesel inboard or outboard Dead heat ...... lets let cost and efficency be the deciding
factor on choice between the 2 . I am willing to research cost comparisons.
just need power specs. can we start....

Is this a new build ? or what ever we can find job to meet requirements ? I really am interested in this project .... it is 3 years +/- old. Hull design is pretty much been decided on. Willallison I believe is the only design that has stuck.and he has put time in it. Power poll is in ....
We will use metric ... Why that is an issue is beyond me but what the heck ........I think we could have converted each others calcs. to fit every ones needs But it has been polled lets use it...Can we start?

Hi guys,

Option 1 is a mental exercise, design a boat by consensus. In the process we had many discussions and a lot of fun. I for one learned a great deal from some of the pros that so graciously contributed. This thread started about 3years ago and comes back to life occasisionaly. Each poll had a time limit so we could move on to the next phase. There have been attempts to start other boats but with less success, which may say something about the interest in this type of boat or just a happy circumstance that brought us together from around the world. Anyway, few could not learn something from reading the whole thread.

Gary

O-1 is something that I would dearly love to see come to some sort of conclusion. Alas, my Westlawn studies, a new son (and another due in the next week or three! ) mean that I have been unable to devote the time to it that it needs.
As Gary said, we've all learned a great deal from the process so far. All the polls to decide things so far closed a long time ago - though some might still technically be 'active'. In a couple of my more recent posts you can find a summary of where the boat stands to date.
Personally, I still think that the design can be improved upon. What we have so far - my rough sketch - is ok - a nice little boat, but it would be good to see O-1 produce something different from the myriad of similar boats that you see advertised on various designers web sites. If you want, why not put some sketches up for comment? O-1 is a little like a snowball...the more ineterest that is shown in it, the more people will want to contribute...

Yes Gary I agree .when I started reading the threads in option one and posted a few
replies. I was asking If this was (on paper project) or physically going to build the boat.
I was somewhat excited about the Idea of getting involved. Being an amateur boat builder . and a professional carpenter for the better part of my life I could not find a better thread to learn tons. all the How's, Why's and opinions of all contribute to the education of all . I still would like to contribute even if it is a mental exercise ..Homework if you will.....what better way

Will,

You dog, LOL conghrats!!!

lakerunner,

How about a first name, when I started here I was worried about my security and I started with duluthboats but since then most know me as Gary. It helps, on a thing like this that you feel like you know this rest of the guys on the team, even if it is an allusion. Please feel free to add to any of the threads on O-1 or post your own lines that fit the window. I may dust off my lines for O-1 and post them. It’s great to see renewed interest in this thread.

I was an active participant on this thread for quite a while and enjoyed the back and forth discussions that we had. Toward the end of the thread's activity, I think that most felt that they had formed some idea of what they saw in the final design. Thing is, they probably saw something a little different from the next guy. So, as the consensus formed (if there ever was such a real consensus), it likely did not match with an individual's specific tastes and there was nowhere to go from there.

Seems normal to me. In the meantime, my wife and I have trailed and cruised our 24 footer up to Canada and a few other nearer places. Today, I took a prospective plans client out in a cold January 25kt northeaster and they left with plans for an extended 27 foot version of the same boat. They wanted a larger cockpit but were satisfied with the rest of the boat so the mod work was pretty easy.

My point is, I doubt that anyone of us will ever build this "consensus" boat but any design that we might build will certainly be affected by participating in the exercise. Actually, I'm glad about this outcome because it means that, unlike any of the other gazillion manufactured toys (like cars) that we buy, we can design and build a boat just to suit ourselves.

Not easy to trailer, but how much time is it going to be on the freeways?
Sacrafice a little speed for a little more room, for week-long trips.
