Walrus gets the prize! I don't remember what the silly-looking things were called, but that's what they are. They were also used in the 60s and 70s as "pirate" radio stations for a while.

aye Sid but the Chinese aren't (wasn't) the only nation to use 'oculii' And lets face it without 'em how the hell can you see where your going? given the standard of modern watchkeepers (and with the tightness of the modern shipowner - which is why the guys ain't much good, training costs money - the scarcity) people need all the help they can get!

For years I have sailed in my traditional boat and she never let me down. Of course she had big and nice eyes.
The boat that I sail now it is bigger, faster...but blind (I felt a lot safer on the other one)

Thanks Longliner, but those photos were taken in a Museum.

But in the end you are right, because, a little bit all over Europe, regions are understanding better the value and richness of their cultural traditions.

That´s very nice and I favor food, wines and beer, in what tradition concerns. It is a pleasure for me to try and sample all those half forgotten treasures.

Cool, someone in the other thread at Pelican said it could be this but was unsure. They look like a imposing barrier or a sweet non-moving target, I wonder what the Germans thought of these. Guess I'll have to read those links when I have a little more time.
