Industrial Designers

Luigi Colani
Industrial Designer

I did not really know this guys name until today, even though I've been familiar with his semi truck design for many years - burned into my mind as an unforgettable image. When I look at his work and the scope of his, I see a few similarities in my own interest and design direction.

Basic History:

His hovercraft design:

Right now I don't know if his hovercraft worked, worked well or in which year it was designed and built.

His work is still on display here in Karlsruhe, South West Germany (Baden-Württemberg). The town council is still arguing over a museum for his works.

He is 'Mr Prototype'. These 'models' are usually made in fiberglass. Some are not overly well finished (I have seen ripples and bumps on the bodies) which makes me believe they were constructed for modeling a preliminary design.

I have seen prototypes for ferrari, other cars, motorcycles, zeplins, areal-survailance, submarines??, trucks and as above, hovercraft.

His Mercedes trucks are real enough - amazing streamlined things.
