How much money for the job?

Hello everyone,

How much money do you ask for/get when you do design, naval architecture, marine engineering.. jobs?

I am asking this because I do not have a clue about prices of such work on the market.

I live in Croatia and will soon become Naval architect/marine engineer.

Thank you for your comments.

Goran

I currently charge $80 Australian per hour for design work. $120 per hour for surveys. Contract design work is always negotiated on fixed fee and usually ends up closer to $30 dollars per hour. Not terribly lucrative.

Sometimes you quote a stupidly high price because you don't want the job and you get it all the same.

If I took a job as an engineer with one of the larger firms I'd get $80 /hr new graduates get around half this for the first couple of years.

Where will you try to find work? You need to get some experience under an other engineer and serve your aprenticeship.

Cheers

Thanks a lot.

I am not quite sure if this applies here in Europe and especially in Croatia but thanks.

I talked to a Duch guy recently and he is not allowed to disclose how much he earns. In fact, the Duch are not allowed to discuss it in general.
It seams that the case is similar elsewhere because no one except you posted, or there is no one interested in posting.

I have a work, but I would like to know how much is a naval architect worth on the market and how much money should I ask for if someone offers me to make him a design.

You work on the size of the vessel. If you want an idea of reasonable charges look at various designers "Stock" plans and add about 50% for non tank tested designs. Also depends on whether you retain the rights ie whether you are working for them or selling them a right to build one vessel.

If it's your first commission or the first of a stock line then you could consider doing it for expenses and no more. Really it's up to yuo to gauge the market.

Hope this helps
