Look at 1500rpm for the genset, it is in sinc with the 50Hz output, and half the revs equals hald the maintenance.

Those lovely little Kubotas etc will simply not last if they have to do 2800+ all the time, give them a chance at least.....

am on another thread trying to remember that old school paying caulk went over Oakum
stuff came in a big ten gallon can had an old schooner on the can with the name in old english under it kinda hard to read
lid had an old school ring clamp instead of the tabs we have today
smelled like dirty shoes or maybe plumbers putty
was Grey and the consistency of plumbers putty
might have been called Pettit
but Im not sure
anyone remember whats it called

Whiting is the product that was used as putty, it is mixed with linseed oil, (usually boiled), to make the consistancy required.

Pettit is a paint company, they may well have sold such a putty as caulking putty, but we always made our own (cheapskates I guess).

cause I remember we used to mix the stuff with oil to get it to stick

If you want to get really fancy, you can soak the Oakum in white lead paint, if ya still are allowed to buy it, the paint helps seal the whole show.

I still have my caulking irons, but fortunately do not use em much anymore, building fancy new boats in China does not require such tools.
The irons are still available in good ol New Zealand I believe, those guys are great boatbuilders, very underrated, but, well, when ya luv sheep .....what can I say. Hi Baaaarbara

we soaked Oakum in hot roofing tar and then payed it with the putty once drove home and set as Robby used to say


why am I thinking that Whiting stuff was a lead based product

whiting is a calcium carbonate mixed with linseed oil. there are lead-based putty products, which would likely out perform whiting.

Landlubber, it produces nominal 48vDC to charge my batteries - I would love a PolarPower alternator as I reckon they are more efficient for DC... but the cost of that and setting it up on the kubota, as the flywheel is replaced by the rotor carrying the magnets and the stator has the coils - hence no brushes or slip rings... about 2000rpm at max load continuous if I can get it...

Is the FischerPanda generator similar in technology to the PolarPower one? I sent FischerPander an email as they seem to be using the Kubota engine for their genset - will be interested in their reply - may post the summary here when it arrives (the 722cc 3 cylinder engine with 8KW continuous for 48v nominal battery system)...

I spent the intervening time listening to the April 11, 2009 podcast from Financial Sense at http://www.financialsense.com/fsn/main.html Well worth the time to get an interesting take on things... I feel that the contributors are "on the mark" more often than anywhere else.... A bit verbose and trying to be "inoffensive", but even there they get rabid callers who can do little more than swear and spit abuse - demonstrating a certain lack of intelligence and "common sense" in the callers...

The "editorials", at the bottom of the page here - http://www.financialsense.com/ has commentary/contributions from a diverse network of contributors also with their own websites, so the views are broad and valid... and regular reading will provide a fairly good big picture view of that segment of the economic markets covered....

They just made several BIG wrong ones fixing the "dot-com" tech bubble in the 80's just got everything set for the bigger "sub-prime-mortgage" toxicdebt bubble and they are now preparing us for the even bigger capital assets bubble which will collapse with a F(*$&^* big bang - such that a nukuklar (nuclear for the non septics) explosion will seem like a small cow fart.... (Not the elected governments but the real ones behind the faces [faeces], - of, - Greenspan and Bernakie & Brown etc....)

They are making the same preparations as for the 30's Depression only bigger, and BIGGER,,, and now, - - on the back of a nation heavily in debt, with no manufacturing capacity for export this time, - - whereas in the 20's the US economy was robust and dynamic with active innovation, - - now relatively, it is uneducated, brain dead and apathetic, but ready for a fight to defend their collective stupidity and blindness.

If you cannot handle that simple truth - knock some of my points off... That will just prove my point... currently 729...

One of the things which has emerged from the recent G20 meeting is that there has been a clause which allows the IMF permission to issue S.D.R.s. (Special drawing rights)
China and Russia have repeatedly requested an alternative to the U.S Dollar as the reserve currency and the re-introduction of S.D.R.s is the first stage of that process
The S.D.R is operating in the same way as an international currency and although t is linked to the Dollar, Yen, Euro and Pound, it is outside the control of any of the member states.
This will inevitably further pressurise the already impoverished U.S. dollar and will likely accelerate the slide into dreaded hyper inflation.
China's position in all this is to be watched carefully. they have held back from offering any more than a token amount to the 1.1 trillion bailout fund. However they have stated their willingness to offer a higher contribution on the acceptance of certain conditions.
Given that the bailout is destined to failure, we are going to be looking at a world currency reserve over which, China has an impressive hold.
Add to this, the fact that much of the U.S .s debt, is to China, and you can see how China's emergence as a superpower is all but guaranteed.

God help us in the days to come.
