| Wiring up yamaha 30 Ok so i got an OMC control box with a 10 pin red plug at the end, looks like this: ![]() And a 30hp yamaha with no harness, but a bunch of cut/disconnected wires that look like this: ![]() ![]() So my question is, which wires do what? I plan to buy a plug tomorrow that will match up to my control box, but ill still have to match up the wires. Are they universal across brands? Or anyone have a yamaha schematic? Its a 1990 3 cyl. Any help would be appreciated. |

| The wiring pinouts of control boxes and outboards are nowhere close to universal across brands. You should be able to figure out which pins on your control box map to which functions by tracing the different colours, or with a multimeter and some patience. You might be able to figure out a couple of the outboard's wires by following them back to the component at which they end, but a bunch of them will likely lead back to one of those hermetically sealed boxes- a shop manual for 1990 Yamaha 3-cyl outboards will be a worthwhile purchase.

| Go to yamahaoutboardparts.com and copy the wiring diagram for your engine. They have drawings of all Yamaha marine products ever made. For the OMC control unit it is less simple. Use a multimeter like marshmat suggested. |

| There are two types of people in regard to these sort of things; those that don't like to do it, but certainly can and those that really shouldn't, because they don't understand why they shouldn't. You are one of the latter. No insult intended, but you just lack the expertise to track down the few simple circuits to get the basics of the engine operational. Getting a wiring diagram shouldn't be questioned, though not totally necessary if you are reasonably familiar with these types of things. The brown wire in the center of the last image is obvious or it should be to someone trying this, if not get some help. |

| I got all the yamaha manuals here with wiringdiagrms and some omc stuff ......but no model no or year ????? my mind reading days are over ... If you were electrically orientated you would just work it out ...but remember as you are not that the ignition switch shorts out the ignition and does not turn it on/off Be cool but not Frosty |

| You can also find someone with a similar motor to your's, see where the wires goes. Most of those motors have the same wiring.

| He says it's a 1990, 3 cylander, 30 HP, but you're right which is it a 30SD, a 30ELD, etc. |

| electric start so may be an ELD .....let the owner speak........ so often these problems are solved and the original poster does not bother to say he sorted it and thanks ...... |

| motor is 30eld. Control box has no markings at all, other than omc, heres a few pictures: ![]() ![]() Thanks for all the helpful replies, except for par, you are a jacka$&. By no means is that supposed to be taken as an insult. This is the first outboard i've ever had to wire up, obviously, so keep the negativity to yourself please. Been very busy the past few weeks due to a horrible roommate situation, disappeared along with about 700 dollars worth of bill money. This is the first chance ive had to check this thread. Gonna take a look at yamahaoutboardparts.com but pist, how can i get ahold of your diagrams? That would be the smartest route i believe. |

| well here we go unfortunatly cannot get them direct from the disc to the screen ..if you were more local could post you a copy of the disc The OMC diagrams are a pig to follow even direct from the disc ....good luck use the + 400 % bottom right on your tool bar to zoom in Few Tips ....in the stop positon the key switch will be closed as it shorts out the igniton to stop the engine and in the run it will be open NOT LIKE A CAR .....in start you will have a connection from live feed to starter solenoid feed . The ignition does not need a battery and is self contained ...you should have a stop switch on the motor ..wiring to this goes up to the key on the remote .... If it has a rocker switch on the handle this is for the trim up /down and is a change over switch centre off ...threee wires ..... |

If you know what it does, just from the image, you're probably going to figure this out fairly quickly. If you don't know what that wire does, you're going to cuss a lot and again hopefully not BBQ and components as you learn. |

| PAR, Don't be so hard on the guy! If we all did only what we knew how to do, the human race would never have evolved. I personally think that JDM is doing EXACTLY the right thing. He doesn't know how to get it running off the top of his head, so he's asking advice. If I was re-wiring an engine, I think I'd have to ask too (and I do interfacing electronics for fun!). | I'm not trying to be hard on him, it's just that I've found certain types of work usually have certain types of people that do it, while everyone else just scratches their respective heads. Electrical systems is one of these fields. It's not disrespect, it's observation. Most people seeing a wire sticking out of something go to a bit of trouble to avoid touching it, because they may get "hit". Then there's the electrical guys, that will see the same wire, realize it's 12 VDC and nothing to worry about as they grab it and move it out of the way. |
