| smartphones just got my first smartphone, a C++ and java mix called android os it does just about everything; navigation better than what i got and photo, video, radio, i-net tv, sail games, and what not only thing missing is auto-pilot out, hmm mayby by bleutooth and laptop phones are not good with water but hey they offer a lot for small change and most probably there must be maritime navigation software too ? |

| Congratulations! AND it'll fit in a plastic, zip-loc bag! If you leave enough air in the bag, it'll even FLOAT! Cuts the wind noise when you talk too. -Tom |

| Yes, I've got one too, yipster. There looks like there's development of a QT4 platform for Android, so it might not be in the far future that we see OpenPilot (or OpenCPN) on Android. However, OP really depends on how quickly I can finish renovating my house. It would be lovely to have an alpha version for Cowes Week though (no promises). Cheers, Tim B.

| Incidentally, Navionics have an android App. Prices vary, but at about £17, it might be worth a look. Cheers, Tim B.

| Yipster, I haven't actually started developing for Android yet. The existing code is for "standard" Linux installs on PC (or PC-like) hardware. It should (well it used to) recompile under Win32 (GCC or MSVC), but the last time I tried it there were fairly major performance issues. I have fixed the plotting bugs that were present in the last CVS version, so the latest will use single or multi-threaded plotting properly. Also, I'm well on the way through writing code which allows the user to extract a short section of coastline from the world dataset, so that will improve the refresh and memory performance quite a bit, and allow more mobile-friendly base datasets. I'm hoping that Android-Lighthouse will reduce the amount of porting required. I will not re-write the code in JAVA, there's no point, given the architecture we use. http://code.google.com/p/android-lighthouse/ I am familiar with Transas, and have worked with them in the past, I have a number of other bits of chart-plotting software to reference against, and most chandlers seem happy enough to let me play with display models of the latest and greatest chart plotters. We could do with more people thinking of novel ways to use OpenPilot, as it is incredibly flexible. Early next year I will be using it to do telemetry and possibly control for a new model boat using the TS7550 embedded platform. Not exactly what OP was designed for, but something it is quite capable of! Cheers, Tim B.

| My opinion (as stated in that forum thread https://sourceforge.net/projects/ope...s/forum/782799 ) has changed since I got an Android phone, but there are still a few bits to do first. Cheers, Tim B.

| Have you tried looking at the Solent! On the developing for Android matter, I'll have to the comms hardware interface in JAVA, using QT bindings, then connect it to the existing C++ libraries. Sounds easy eh? Development for the TS7550 has slowed (due to memory restrictions on compilation), but I have started to get some new code running under emulated ARM technology, which is the same as the board uses. The house is now coming along reasonably well, but there is still only one of me and a lot of work to do. I will keep you posted. Tim B.
