Security deterrent Does anyone have any experience or suggestion as to a product that could be tied to a ship board security system that would emit a noise loud enough in an alram condition to work as a deterrent to anyone intruding on a vessel. We are building an expedition vessel and would like to use the engine room as a safe room with the hope that an offensive noise would drive away any unwanted visitors. In my limited research I see products that produce noise up to about 120 decibels but I don't have any point of reference to know whether this would do the trick. All thoughts about any aspect of this plan will be appreciated.

Anything over about 110 decibels is considered hazardous to human life depending on duration. A 50 BMG produces about 160 and has a longer range than RPGs but you need to be topside for it to have good effect (Typical pirates would have no problem silencing your alarm with said rocket launcher). Anything as large as .338 Lapua on up is "anti-material" and will stop their boats where they float (or don't float!).

There are very nasty piezo alarm buzzers on the market with 2 or more elements that produce a 120 dB dissonant tone between 2 and 3 Khz. In a confined space it urges people to drop anything in there hands and cover their ears.

I have seen the piezo alarms mentioned and I will inquire further about that. You mentioned the frequency, is that important? Thanks for the sugegstions on this. I guess if Madonna, Naomi Campbell, Spice Girls, etc. aren't available these other suggestions are the next best thing.

Any sound at 120 dB is painful, it is the dissonant combination that makes the piezo alarms unbearable. Like a daycare center with crying babies, but much, much louder. Unlike Naomi Campbell and the barking dog, at a few Khz. the noise is reflected by all hard surfaces, making it difficult to locate the source. And these piezo devices draw only a few 100 milli-amps. If you combine this with a strobe light in the otherwise dark engine room, an intruder will surely think he opened the door to hell.

you dont want them on your boat or near enough to hear the alarm ..remember an AK47 is a short range inacurate .22 gun Get something bigger and with more range and use it ..god man you are in the US so no problem getting a big gun

Isn't the primary chamber for AK-47s (Actually a rather rare weapon, most aren't 'AK-47s') an intermediate .30 cal? How much larger would you want to be shooting in rapid fire?

http://ultra-hyperspike.com/hs-16-ac...ng-device.html ...then have a Naomi Campbell CD on standby. THAT should do the trick.

your locked in the engine room and they decide to sink the boat maybe the bridge would be a better choice to fortify, that way at least you'll have access to radios

offensive noise would drive away any unwanted visitors? How about the sweet mellow sounds of 140db Shotgun Blasts. The acoustic energy in a single report from a high-powered rifle or shotgun is equivalent to almost 40 hours of continuous exposure at 90 dBA. Funny? They proberbly wont hear a thing after the first shot. ![]() Or you could play some Mikey Jackson on the radio. Thats plenty Scarwy.

A buddy and i once climbed into the town firehall tower to smoke a joint ... While sitting giggling about how much of the town we could see the fire siren started up right under us... It was so loud it was impossible to remove your hands from your ears to climb down.... We ended up curled into the fetal position until it stopped... I thought i was gonna die... So sound will work and an anti theft device... Cheers Tug
