It is pointless shooting at pirates, as they will always have more firepower than you ever will, if you do shoot at them, they will put you in the too hard basket and rpg your arse to davey jones locker.

The biggest problem with them is that you don't know they are onboard until its too late. They are silent, do not show on radar, and they are organised. Being ex navy, i've heard about an instance when an american war ship was overpowered by a group of pirates, all they wanted where the weapons onboard, which they took and let ship go (a US warship is no good for them, as too easy to find and put a harpoon into). They have the skill to do this to a warship which is always on watch, do you think you have any chance stopping them.

The best bet is to stay out of the pirates know area's and if you do need to travel in these waters, make your boat look like the biggest hunk of junk on the water and they might leave you alone.

On a side note, guy i worked with had a friend that was very anti pirate, he oraganised a like mind group of people to go hunt them, he hasn't been heard from since.

They have cloaking devices, these pirates, and RPGs that out-distance high-powered rifles...
The story..."and hasn't been heard from since..." has derivative dramatic effect - and you made it up.

Hi GoSlow,

Have a DVR system installed with boards saying 'smile you are on camera' The footage can be transmitted ie via internet to security or who ever is going to be handling the situation. The footage will also serve as evidence and is usefull to identify the culprit.
