Oh, boy, do I have my work cut out for me. I am about to embark on completely rewiring my 1977 Whitby 42 sailboat (Hey, it's Canadian built, that's good here, right?) and have torn out the old panel and he boat is on the blocks and all I have to do is.....figure out what I need to do. Googled here and saw these totally excellent wiring schemes and am now depressed! Man, you guys are good. I'm still looking for a good book or two to get me started and you guys are turning out works of art! I had a 50 Amp AC shore power I want to duplicate and had an Onan Genset 7.5KW that I tore out and will eventually replace. My engine room is bare (Main engine out as well) so I can start anew. I guess I'll simply start reading through all these forums to glean what knowledge I can get. I do know I want a clean install like you guys have and want all new wiring. I may get an inverter as well so I'll plan on that in the grand plan. Thanks for a good start. Ummm....any good book recommendations on how to go about this? Thanks, folks,

Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual by Nigel Calder

Boatowner's Illustrated Electrical Handbook by Charlie Wing

There are plenty of others. A quick Google search on marine wiring or marine electrical will give you plenty of research but I do recommend the two I've listed above. If you want to start a separate thread we can work together and I'll sketch out your plan like I did for my project. Kind of like an "electrical plan by committee" *lol*.

A new line of modular panels from Bluesea including of all things a "mimic panel"! ;o) And I was just about to patent my idea!

I like the idea of the modular design as it adds a lot of flexibility for upgrades down the line. I can see it driving up the complexity of the basic system design quite a bit though. Those familiar with Bluesea systems would probably adapt pretty quick.

There's a lot of good info on the Bluesea site Delta. Worthy of a look. You can get a copy of their catalogue which is chock-a-block with info.

On my boat I have two AC units, water heater, air/water cooled refrigeration, trash compacter, batter charger, bunch of lighting on the 110 side. Of course, gonna upgrade a lot of that.

Who knows what I'll add on the DC side but I want to have capacity.

Inverter? Why Knot? (Partial Pun intended)

7 or 8 KW generator to go in to give me fifty amps.

50 amp shore power.

Oh, man, this is gonna be surreal.

From this point in time it all seems a little overwhelming but the sky's the limit and I have the time. (Although the marina charges are killing me even though I am on the blocks)

I'll be lurking here, for sure. Once I get an idea of where I'm headed, I'll start adding up all the amps I'll need!!!!

You might want to try e-Bay for a slightly used nuclear reactor!!!

Yeah, first things first. I'm still dismantling the interior and finally - after fifteen years - glassing over some leaks that were behind the engine panel area. Seems like the gap between the deck liner and the interior liner had a gap where water from the cockpit was getting through. Gonna paint the interior and get better access to the wire runs. One problem I face is time. I have been living one month here in Fl working and one month off in the CO mountains on my time off for the past decade so my work on the boat has been limited to ensuring she is kept dry and mildew free. When I'm here I run fans all the time and when I'm off I have had one of my employees going down and running fans two times a week. Gonna have to start spending more time here in FL on my time off which means in the summer months I need to hook up a portable AC unit as it is too freakin hot here to even work!!! Also gonna replace all ten portlights with stainless ones - still looking at where for that - so this will indeed be a work in progress. I will post a picture of the area where I tore out the original electrical - pretty stark - and hopefully see how we progress from there. Thanks.
