Are you asking about AC, DC or bonding?

Found the company.

look up www.mgduff.co.uk
They have loads of very good papers covering anything that attacks any type of boat / ship.

In very, very global terms: to avoid voltage differentials. A bird can sit happily on a wire carrying 250.000 volts, but if it had really long legs and could put one foot on the ground, it would go up in smoke.

Tons of info in this forum, use the Search function.

This site does have engineers dealing with ship earthing problems.

I always preferred a " Y " system with the center connection as the ground. It will not tolerate a second voltage as a grounding. I go back in electric power about 53 years.
People first. Repair any phase that is starting to lose full insulation to ground.

With todays many different current sensing equipment. ANY VERY SAFE SYSTEM is possible.

As a observation to safety in tankers & grounding.

The tanker shipping industry is CHEAP. To allow a ungrounded system in a all metal structure is VERY VERY DANGEROUS to anything that wants to stay alive.

Try to pull that stunt in a metal mobile trailer. Pure risking peoples safety by most USA electrical codes.

GREEDY GREEDY oil tanker ship owners. RUN A DAMM full ground to all pieces of any energized equipment !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That code Is HOPEFULLY NOT ALLOWED on any ship transporting Gasoline, Naptha, Natural gas, Propane.

Anything to make a bigger profit with a known dangerous piece of old equipment.

"Cost us money to wire the ship correctly."

all the 24v electronics on a ship have isolated negative side ( floating earth) that is supplied via the UPS's or batteries
The cases of the equipment are grounded to the hull
Much of the equipment will flag an error if they sense the ground and the negative have a connection
