Starting the 19th day since leaving the Galapagos, Bourgnon has had good speed all last night sometimes at 9-10 knots, he came within 25 miles of one island after daylight, and now at noon local time he has some 80 miles remaining to his Nuku Hiva dinner appointment.

I hope he's enjoying himself, and looking forward to a well-earned party!

Yvan is now just 30 nm or so from the end of this leg, still dark there for a few more hours (they are just one time zone west of California).

    Here's an update from yesterday:

I fear that once again we must return to this ancillary topic of cannibalism...

Prior to being ordained (in 2010?), it seems that Fyodor Konyukhov was active in converting natives in this area to the habit of eating instant noodles! With the support of his sponsor, Rollton:

Yvan has arrived in Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas

His recent post hit with the bing

Thursday, March 27: Yvan just arrived this morning at 6 o'clock hour local (16 h 30 French time) on Nuku Hiva, the mystical island of the Marquesas. An express crossing of the Pacific in less than 20 days! Sacred performance for this sailor who has already accumulated (about 20 000 km) 10,000 miles from his departure from les Sables D'olonne. Soon his first impressions. Remember that it is to carry out the first round of the world on a catamaran of sport (6 m 30 long) without cockpit. He has also opted to go solo without gps, weather, without assistance.

And some photos of his arrival in Nuku Hiva

Bourgnon in a dockside video yesterday,

Dart-sailor François Morisset has partly translated this on the YouTube page:

I agree that is a very troubling question.

If he doesn't know already, someone should tell Yvan about this method; he already has the duct tape and plastic containers on board so all he needs is a few bottles of air.

    ;)

    ^ ^ ^

It could be the basis for a very good beer commercial?

Bourgnon's sponsorship problems would be then be taken care of.

And I think there is something scheduled to happen in Bourgnon's suit versus Vincent Beauvarlet next week. So Yvan should get on the phone immediately with Kronenbourg, Stella Artois... Or perhaps there is an Australian beer that could make use of a good French ad campaign?

    ...

There another video today, a minute of short clips taken by Bourgnon during this last leg:

    ...

And Bourgnon has circulated a new letter with details about this leg; most of which we've covered here, but there were a couple of new items:

The Tuamotus or the Tuamotu Archipelago are a chain of islands and atolls in French Polynesia. They form the largest chain of atolls in the world, spanning an area of the Pacific Ocean roughly the size of Western Europe.

    Did you know that?

I didn't; but then, I've never more than barely set foot in the Pacific.

Anyway! That's where Yvan is headed next. He's casting off from Nuku Hiva in a couple of hours, and expects to be in the Tuamotu islands in a couple of days.

I really feel sorry for the guy, having to go through this ordeal with scarcely any sponsors paying his way.

Yes, what a fabulous pic. Hate to think of what will happen when the ocean level rises though - which it is!
Found this old map that gives an idea where Yvan is - and where he still has to go - but plotted as if the globe was a cylinder!
Also a pic for Yvan to see how the locals fish :)

Otherwise know as a Mercator projection - used by 80% of the world

"Mercator's 1569 edition was a large planisphere measuring 202 by 124 cm, printed in eighteen separate sheets. As in all cylindrical projections, parallels and meridians are straight and perpendicular to each other. "
