voyaging canoe hulls

Straight sided hulls - what disadvantages?
I see them on voyaging canoes but also on the occassional modern cat and also on outriggers and proa's....
Proa's i understand due to shunting but the others? Dont they tack 'badly'?
Asymetric hulls usually have the "flat" side on the inside too....
Construction should be easier tho? - for voyaging canoe type - as flat keel midsections and rise on each side.
