Doug. That C-Fly looks remarkably like a modern version of "Williwar"

Response time delay is inescapable unless the input is the correct large distance ahead. This last sentence strikes me as wrong. You don't need rapid reaction for small amplitude low frequency ride height input. Are you trying to add pitch control? Pitch is another mater. It can be controlled but I think it is best left to the skipper to control it with weight transfer, sail control....a boat that sails itself is boring.

Tuning spring and damper values would also be an interesting exercise because, unlike in suspension which seeks to minimise energy transfer, you need the wand force to operate the flap. It may be possible to set up a system that gives benefits for certain frequencies, and I would be interested to see some experimental results for such a system as it may be good enough, even if not ideal.
Note; The spring I described adding in series is NOT the spring you have today holding the wand against the waves. Adding the spring and damper I described might lower the force needed from the wand control spring (by isolating the wand from the flap mass and damping) or it might increase the WC spring needed. What I say is certain is that ride height needed is NOT the high frequency bouncing wand I see in all videos.

The reason for the wand and flap system is heave control, so I'm not sure of the basis for your comment.

Heave is height in this context. Sorry, I meant to refer to pitch -my mistake. I will correct it.

Heave/pitch mixing

It seems to me that it is possible for some wand systems that are located very much forward of the main foil(whose flap they control) to, potentially, in certain conditions, send mixed signals to the flap in response to pitch and not just changes in altitude. So heave control is mixed with pitch response. Some wand systems are very adjustable and can pretty much prevent this from being a problem in most conditions. And boats with twist grip controlled rudder foils can probably avoid it altogether.

Just got an update from Dave and corrected the takeoff windspeed above from 8 knots to 6 knots. And he says "in any windspeed above 4 knots you should drop in the lifting foils with the intent to plane with assist, and then, skill permitting, fly".

Wow, Bill-- think you got that right? What in the world is "complicated slamming"?

Well, foilers are a bit more complicated than most rigs...wand etc.

And, I used to have a boat that would go airborn...water upon return is not so soft...believe it.
