The sea is full of remote sensing drones. Drone are sent into hurricanes. . Recently one was lost and i recieved a notice to mariniers.
If you do some googling and know what terms to use the drone positions are known.

I cant remember the term..not drone.. Drones are little silvery sparkles in the sky homing in on your cell phone preparing to level your neighborhood with those cool hellfire missles.

    Perhaps remote sensing . Autonomous

    Saildrone

Cool to see Saildrone being discussed!
El Guero. No technology was "borrowed". Everything was done by these guys from the fabrication of the drones to the software. The wing system was developed by the founder over many years. Check out Richard Jenkins Greenbird speed world record on Youtube.
Autonomous piloting is not designed to give anything to the boating community.
The idea of Saildrone is that it is a safe and cost effective alternative to large ocean research ships costing $30,000 a day to collect data or deploy scientific instruments at sea. Its not designed to be a commercial cargo carrier.
It is equipped with AIS and a collision avoidance system. It can also be controlled by an Iphone at any time. Due to its size and the way its built it would come off second best in a collision with anything of any size.
It sails intelligently and i would guess makes better decisions than most of us, its a robot!
Good luck to the Saildrone team (4 guys)! Nearly there, looking like Monday.:D

Thats just terrific! Do you know if they've had any encounters with sea junk?

Nice article and pictures in the December issue of Seahorse. It's much bigger than it looks!

The autonomous vehicles get destroyed by other surface craft,

They might have AIS beacons but 90 percent of vessels in the world arent equiped with AIS recievers.

System failure onboard the autonomous vehicle is also an issue

A small craft like a sailing vessel would have a bad day if they collided with one.

Its the same as drift bouys.
