Need a 29' OFFSHORE CAT design hey folks Im looking for someone to put my ideas on paper for a 29ft offshore cat? The KD860 is almost what Im looking for but I think I can make better space out of 29ft hulls. 1. I want a fuller bridgedeck forward for more berth space? some netting is good? bowsprit? 2. An open style deck with separate entrances for both hulls facing aft? come up out of the hulls walk straight in the water? ala wharram woods 3. flybridge style hard top? for 360 views? about 6' high from deck 4. steps on hull transoms? ala everybody 5. single engine nacelle center deck? ala waller etc 6. long foldable single rudder aft of engine center deck? ala ? 7. wheel steering center deck? ala mono hull 8. curved ")" deck transom aft of wheel? I want very little 90 degree angles through out ? ala fusion etc 9. access to front of boat thru center of deck with notched flybridge for head clearance? Ive basically took ideas from different cats and am trying to squeeze them into one small package and keep hopefully performance. I only need a penciled illustration at the moment any good illustrators out there to volunteer services? or small fee? the KD860 is the base for the drawing..... thanks!

Okay, I'll bite but first a couple questions. Why 29'? Not 28, not 30 but gotta be 29.... why? Why a central rudder? Btw, Chris White did a 29' central rudder type design not too far out from your parameters. Check out his book, it's in there.

Well im just using the KD860 as a guide. I will take any convincing argument on why I should go smaller? Trying a minimalist approach? more with less? a central rudder because i dont want twin rudders the interfere with the transom steps? Any pics of the Chris White design?

just wanted to add that a 29' cat is actually 58 ft total length... thats alot of boat by any standards. PS looking for a mild hull flare with minimum wetted surface

If you do a kick-up rudder, you can still walk up your steps on either side of it.

Bob Oram is also an advocate of a single rudder on one side only. Might be better than a central rudder. Central rudders are both surface piercing and kelp, damage and sculch collectors. Brian E, however is an advocate of centralized foils on cats. Personally, I'm leaning towards the only symmetry being the hulls but with all foils (including rig) in one hull. (Nope, NOT quite a proa advocate and won't go there) There are also a variety of other ways to permit stern access with outboard rudders such as cutting away the inboard side of the hull at the last 3-5 feet of length. Sorry, no pics of the Chris White 29'er.

John Shuttleworths 31' cat seems to meet most of your criteria except the centre mounted rudder, hardtop (could still use a bimini) and rear facing companionways. Its only 2' longer with lots of offshore passages to it's credit. You could fit wheel steering behind the mast step, any reason why you want wheel steering? Most of the time on a boat like this you would have the autopilot on while cruising most autopilots also have a remote http://www.john-shuttleworth.com/Fossailing-story.html

Derek Kelsall designed cats in that size range, employing a central pod for an outboard an a central rudder. From all reports they perform well. http://www.kelsall.com/Designs/KSSTrailAndSail.htm

And i thought i was alone in wanting a similar boat to one described by Shamaalah. I can add to the discussion though. Has anyone looked at this de villier design? here's the link. http://www.devilliersyachtdesign.co....31plycatamaran It may not tick all your boxes, but it does appear to satisfy the major concern always; simplicity.

Bob Oram's 29' Islander might fit the bill. Take a look: http://boboramdesign.wordpress.com/29-islander/
