Team Invictus' C Class cat has a 40 foot wing sitting on top of a 180kg boat! It was much admired at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show earlier this month.
A special visitor was Alain Thebault, from the Hydroptere project. He is joining Jérémie Lagarrigue, who sailed Patient Lady 6 at the 2010 Little America's Cup, in Newport, RI. They have stated their intention to bring a new boat to the next championships here in the UK which would be great for the event; Alain was very much drawn to the Corinthian spirit of the event which we wholly support.

LITTLE AMERICA’S CUP, CHALLENGE ITALIA CONFIRMS ITS PARTICIPATION

Palermo- After 31 years an Italian challenge for the Little America’s Cup is filed. In 2013 Challenge Italia, an Italian team based in Palermo, will compete in this prestigious competition with a crew composed by Francesco Bruni and Pierluigi De Felice.

Challenge Italia confirms its participation in the World C Class Championship, also known as the Little America’s Cup, to be held in 2013 in Falmouth, Cornwall. Challenge Italia will compete under the flag of Club Canottieri Roggero di Lauria, the prestigious club based in Palermo that is also involved in the America’s Cup with Venezia Challenge.

Roberto Grippi, Team Manager of Challenge Italia, expressed his enthusiasm on behalf of the whole team for the progress made since the project began in October 2010.

Benedetto Inzerillo and Attilio Albeggiani will lead for the design and construction team. Yacht designers for over 15 years, they have won many championships and Italian national races with their designs. Francesco Belvisi, Luca Caruso and Giuseppe Musca, talented young yacht designers, complete the design team.

Article was hard to decipher giving the initial impression that the project was part of Team Hydroptere. I'm not clear on the whole story at all.....

Gooday Doug & others. That's a nice 'wing-sail' combination they've got there. Sure be interesting to see how it goes campared to a full solid-wing form. I would suspect - it might go far better than some might think. I'd sure have one of them to go - play with. It's nice. IMHO Ciao, james

BIG TECH FOR LITTLE AMERICA'S CUP

(July 31, 2012) - The catamaran that will compete in the Little America's
Cup under the Swiss flag in September 2013 is currently under construction
at the Decision SA shipyard in Ecublens, Switzerland. It will benefit from
innovative Swiss technology that has never previously been used on a yacht.

The catamaran was designed by architectural firm VPLP, which is working
exclusively with Hydros on the project, with the aim of winning the
legendary race to be held in the United Kingdom in September 2013.

Two versions of the catamaran are being built by the Decision SA shipyard,
so that the sailing team will be able to test and compare different
configurations of foils and centerboards. The construction process is
innovative and completely new: both catamarans will be built using thin ply
technology (TPT), a technique invented on the shores of Lake Geneva that has
already been used in Formula 1 and on a number of wing masts for the
forthcoming America's Cup, but which has never previously been employed in
yacht construction.

As Gilles Rocher, Head of Marketing at North TPT explains: "This process
allows us to use exactly the right amount of material in the right place and
in the right way, thereby optimizing the yacht's structure and markedly
improving her performance."

Meanwhile Bertrand Cardis, Head of the Decision SA shipyard is of the
opinion that, "The construction method has more in common with aeronautics
than traditional racing yachts. We fine-tuned this technique when we built
the second plane for Bertrand Piccard, and we are now going to use it in the
construction of the hulls, beams and wing mast of the Hydros catamaran."

Right from when it first took place in 1961, the Little America's Cup has
symbolized fundamental research and ground-breaking technological
development, on a human scale. The yachts, which have a crew of two, must
measure a maximum of 7.62 m x 4.20 m, with a sail surface area of no more
than 27.8 m2. These restrictions are precisely what makes the class so
exciting, since the yacht designers are forced to explore cutting-edge

In September 2013, Hydros will enter two state-of-the-art Class C multihulls in the Little Americas Cup at Falmouth, UK. The yachts are currently under construction at the Decision SA boatyard in Lausanne. They will be the first yachts ever built using the�thin ply technology (TPT), an innovative Swiss invention which will result in a lighter and stiffer structure.

The rigid wing that will replace the sails is also under construction at Decision.

The first Class C crew will comprise Jeremie Lagarrigue and Billy Besson, who recently came third in the Formula 18 World Championships (sport catamarans) at Long Beach. The selection process is currently underway for the second catamaran crew.

C Class Catamaran Rules
January 1, 2011


1.A catamaran is defined as a two-hulled sailing boat with essentially duplicate or mirror image hulls, fixed in parallel positions.
1.Sail area shall not be more than 27.868 square meters (300 square feet) Sail area to be measured in accordance with the "ISAF Measurement & Calculation of Sail Area Instructions" (Last issued May 1985).
1.The overall length of the catamaran shall not be more than 7.62 meters (25 feet). The length shall be measured between perpendiculars to the extremities of the hulls with the catamaran in her normal trim. The measurement shall be taken parallel to the centre line of the craft and shall exclude rudder hangings. However, if the athwartships width of a rudder within 153mm (6 inches) of the bottom of the hull is more than 76mm (3 inches), the length shall be taken to the aftermost point of the rudder.
1.The extreme beam shall not be more than: 4.267 meters (14 feet). The beam shall be measured at right angles to the centre line of the craft at the widest point and including all fixed or adjustable apparatus with the exception of a normally accepted trapeze or retractable seat.
1.The crew shall be two people.
1.There is NO rule 6.
1.The C class emblem shall be carried on the mainsail and shall consist of the letter C over two parallel horizontal lines over national letters and sail numbers. Sail numbers shall be allotted by the National Authority or Class Association appointed by the National Authority. The class emblem, national letters and distinguishing numbers shall be placed as prescribed in the Yacht Racing Rules.
Obviously there are interpretations and measurement instructions that add a bit to this, but these are the rules.
