Racing cancelled for today. The regatta format is changed to allow two days of fleet racing(Wednesday and Thursday) and two days of match racing(Friday and Saturday).

Steve, when's the last time a C Class cat with a wing sailed against a Class cat with a "soft" sail-as best you can remember?
Has a C CLass Cat with a wing ever gone up against a C Class cat with an "advanced" soft sail rig-like the A Class use?

    -------------
Good luck with the weather-I hope you win!

Not Steve - but here's an answer: Australian full wing with two trailing edge flaps C Class Miss Nylex lost 3-4 to US C Class soft sail rigged Aquarius V in 1976. The full wing was very much superior in moderate and above winds, especially to windward, but lost out in light conditions when the hard rig could not be cambered up enough in comparison to the soft rig. That was the last time a bendy soft rig competed.

Thanks ,Gary. There have been so many advances in "soft" sail tech since then it would be interesting to see a head to head now....
Closest I know about was Ben Hall's A Class wing which was not competitive...

Steve Clark capsized with Aethon on the first windward leg. No clue why yet.
What a sad,sad outcome for him, Oliver and the Team...

Ashby/Spithill(Alpha) about 20 boat lengths ahead of Canaan so far...2:16 EDT
Canaan caught up and is leading at the leeward mark....2:29
Coverage by Sailing Anarchy is better than nothing-but just barely!! See Justin TV above..
Canaan had 35 sec lead now down to just a few seconds-quite a match race! 2:31
    ---
    Invictus broke their port daggerboard..

    ----------
I've had it-the "cameraman" shoots the clouds, the inside of the camera boat 90% of the time-damn few pictures of the boats.....The sound is atrocious and all of a sudden they put on punk rock music-pitiful.........

    ------------------
Alpha wins first two races. Third race coming up 4:40 ..Much better coverage than it was earlier... Canaan in the lead..... Canaan wins third race.
    ---
Good summary of the days events here from the NYYC Communications Director: http://nyyc.org/archives_public/article_834/
    from the summary:
Ashby and Spithill were passed on the first leg by the event’s defender Canadians Fred Eaton and Magnus Clarke. Then it was a full-on rumble between these two cats, both designed by Steve Killing, and indeed, both owned by Eaton. Anyone who ever said that multihulls can’t match race was forever silenced by this display. There were passes galore – the absolute essence of racing. The winning margin was two seconds in the Australians’ favor.

    Statement from Willy Clark: (sa)

The Cogito Project will release a statement through Media Pro at the appropriate time as we have done for the entire run up to this event. This statement will include both the status the wing and the state of the team as a whole, but only when we have had a chance to fully assess the situation. In the meantime the team will not be taking questions. This has been a traumatic day for all involved and both the team and their families would appreciate everyones sensitivity.

    Thank you,

    Willy Clark

    That'll buff right out...

It's not only a tragedy for Steve not to be able to compete, but Cogito's wing was an important piece of history, too. Now lost.

What happened to Steve: They were hit by some disturbed air that caused Oliver to lose his footing and fall overboard out of his trapeze harness. His foot was caught on the main sheet, pulled it in and resulted in the capsize.....

    Little America's Cup- Steve Clark

    Statement from Steve Clark: http://www.nyyc.org/archives_public/article_840/

    One paragraph of five:

“The thing I would like to stress here,” said Clark, “is that this was not a product of the conditions. It was a freak accident that could have happened at any time, at any wind speed. If the wing is trimmed all the way to windward and can’t be eased the boat will tip over, and these boats are not designed to do that. It’s a tough end to the last 18 months of work Oliver and I put in, but sometimes these things happen.”
