I interviewed both Irens and Coville when Sodebo was launched. The idea was that a sailor could handle a slightly larger tri than an ORMA 60 - about 75ft. So the rig and beam was that of a 75footer. With the rig set at this size you didn't need to go super powerful but you could increase the main hull length without incurring much of a weight penalty and get a large increase in safety downwind. The box rule of the ORMA tris had led to them getting much too square.

Gooday bloke or Mr. Redreuben - since you don't understand my Qld 'ockerisms'.

I've spoken at some lenmgth to a number of 'big baoat' multihull sailors - one of the top skippers would be Phil Smith who built, owned & raced a big red tri designed by Lock Crowther. In the end the tri had been fitted with two different sized pairs of 'floats'. Regardless of the difference in wetted surface area, air & water drag & buoyance - Phil still believes that the smaller 'floats' were considerably faster in all conditions. He was one 'hell of a good sailor' & I still learn a lot from talking to him. Big is not neccessarily better, safer or faster. Look at the bottom of the 'floats' of 'Team Australia' - I can see that the shape of the 'floats' is quite different & seems to have a lot going for the highly developed shape. ciao, james

    from the crew.org.nz forums

P'zzaz Catamaran a 14 metre cat designed by Shawn Arber sailed in the Coastal Classic 2012 Sail number NZL 7775.
P'zzaz suprised us enjoying the heavy reaching conditions and winnig the Coastal Classic multihull division on handicap with a fast 10 hours 20 minute trip to Russell, and an adjusted time of 6hrs 48 . Anyway it was a fun ride and we were thrilled to see the speedo showing over 24 knots. Not too bad for a 12 tonne cruising cat. Yay ! Handicap will be shot to pieces now. This video records the trip for crew Paul, Lisa, Derek, Sue and John.
