You can see where the guy driving is on the low side, bad view of the crossing and has the helm as hard over as he can, someone should have eased the main.

Multihull Racing Circuit History ...the beginnings with Formula 40 in France

I need to go back thru a few of these videos....great shots. Sure wish we had some of this excitement and coverage when I was growing up with the multihull world 71-92.

I think back to the beginnings of the Formula 40 class cats, and later tris over in France in 1986. Olympic Tornado sailer and sail maker Randy Smyth (with crewmate Cam Lewis & Gino Morrelli) was the only American competing that first year. Gino Morrelli was the designer of that vessel. The size of the crowds that gathered at the little seaport towns to watch the racing that was actually offshore out of sight of the huge crowds that many time had to take charter vessels out to the course, or watch the big TV monitors that were tractor-trailered in to the 'tent village' that had been set up.

I also vividly remember that first America's Cup that included a catamaran, the wing-sailed 'Stars and Stripes' in 1988. All of us multihullers thought that was the 'beginning of a new sailing world' for multihulls. NOT to be, it had to wait another 13 years till 2011.
