This time 573,1 just happened to be close to 570nm, but usually those numbers are very different, as the distance covered in 24h is usually not almost directly towards the finish line as it just happened to be now !!!

That means you have to calculate the distance yourself, and not just copy it from the site in order to see how well they are doing.

An example of that :

Current position as of March 16, 2010 (03:00:00 UTC):
Distance to go: 2 603 nm
Distance over past 24 hours: 662,0 nm

Current position as of March 17, 2010 (03:00:00 UTC):
Distance to go: 2 254 nm
Distance over past 24 hours: 460,7 nm
Distance to go change in latest 24h = 2603nm - 2254nm = 349nm

460,7 nm covered in 24h, but only 349 nm towards the finish in the same time period !!!
On average that means over 40degs off the course has been sailed to get only 349 towards the mark from actual 460,7 distance moved at the same time. That happens when weather isn't co-operating, but it's it's much beter now !
They'll beat the record if nothing breaks by days.

yacht with no restrictions. Current record holder is Bruno Peyron and crew,
who in 2005 sailed Orange 2 to a time of 50 days, 16 hours, and 20 minutes
at an average of 17.89 knots.

Saturday 20 March 2010 at 21H 40M 45S (TU) Groupama 3 skippered by Franck Cammas with his crew of 9 crossed the finish line between the Lizzards and Ushant, winning the coveted Jules Verne Trophy.

What's the new record between equator and the finish line between the Lizzards and Ushant ?

My prediction is that record will be the same after 10 years, but Jules Verne will not.

That record up the atlantic is propably MUCH harder to beat than jules verne record, which just might fall when BP5 gets on it ...

Interesting that everytime Bruno Peyron has improved the record, it was smashed by around a week of difference in elapsed time, and when anybody else improves it, it's only done by days.

The World Sailing Speed Record Council announced the ratification of a new
outright Round the World record, set by Franck Cammas (FRA) and a crew of 9
onboard the 103-foot trimaran 'Groupama 3'. From January 31, 2010 to March
20, 2010, Cammas covered the 21,760 nm course in 48 days 7 hours 44 minutes
52 seconds (18.76 knots avg. speed). The previous record set in 2005 of 50
days 16 hours 20 minutes 4 seconds was held by skipper Bruno Peyron (FRA)
