specially with off topic posts like that last

lets try and get it back on track people, no reason to hold any grudges or act like children

Anyone got any close ups of those foils in action ? cause there's a subject worth discussing. The suggest that the boat is outrunning its own cavitation seems a bit impossible to me. The point of greatest pressure difference will be just off the surface ( boundary layer effect and all ) of the upper back side of the foil where most of the lift comes from. Unless of course at some point in the "flight" they angle the foils slightly and look for a planing surface out of it, in which case I think they might want to ventilate the upper surface as much as possible, although I don't see anything like that happening in any of the films.

Optimist breaks record!

from the April 1, 2011 edition of Scuttlebutt:

SCUTTLEBUTT 3311 - Friday, April 1, 2011

NEW WORLD RECORD

The World Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSRC) this week ratified a new all
out speed record for 500 meters, set by 12 year old Brandon Douglas aboard
his Opti SUPER GOOSE.

Brandon, his father Nate, and two team members carried the Opti to the top
of 2,425' (739 meters) Yosemite Falls, where they rigged and launched SUPER
GOOSE over the Falls with young Brandon at the tiller.

Verified by radar spotters, Douglas achieved an incredible 107.75 knots for
the required distance before bailing with his parachute, landing without
incident in the parking lot of Degnan's Deli. SUPER GOOSE sailed into
history during its 10 second voyage, never to be seen again.

lol, now THERE is a stunt you can point at whenever the word "cheater" creeps upon your lips. ... They may have followed the LETTER of the rules, but I'd say DEFINITELY NOT the INTENT..rofl
Thanks for the laugh Doug! :-)

(hmmm, maybe the rules should be modified to state that the boat's weight must be supported by liquid water during record speed run?)

SpeedDream is a Dream?

so I saw this on facebook:
http://www.facebook.com/speeddream

Founded by lifelong sailors Vlad Murnikov and Brian Hancock, SpeedDream is a quest to build the fastest monohull in the world

Mission
SpeedDream, one of the most advanced and ambitious projects in modern sailing, is an attempt to create the fastest ocean-going sailing monohull, capable of reaching 50+ knots and sailing across Atlantic and around the world in record time. For the first time in history the performance gap between monohulls and multihulls will be closed.

then there's this website:
http://mxspeeddream.com/can-a-monohu...multhull-.html

they think a mono can be faster than a multi .......

sorry if any of this is a repeat, just found this thread, and the knotted thread part just above this (yuck) so I didn't want to wade thru any of that.

Fastest....

Dennis, there are a number of threads about the various Speed Dream prototypes:

Monohull Speed: Speed Dream by Vlad Murnikov

Speed Dream 35 Prototype

Speed Dream 27 Prototype

------
And by the way I think a properly designed monohull could beat a multi as well! It's already been done by the little Moth that has beaten every multihull under 20' and will probably nail larger multies before its finished. Of course, I love multies-particularly trimarans but nevertheless a monohull on foils or planing is one damn fast machine.....

I foresee a broaching issue when the keel drops back down into the water at speed. Seems like all that drag out on such a long moment arm will cause problems with stability

I doubt it because it hasn't been an issue on any canting keel boats yet-theres just too much other weight going straight at high speed.

Defline 2QP with dual canting keels, VOR 70, VOR 70-to give idea of keel size, Open 60 Hugo Boss with man in suit on keel, Q a 40' 180 degree canting keel design by Reichel-Pugh in Australia(under development) :

Its good to see development on all fronts mono and multi. The concept of 'Q' has its own problems the boat has already fallen over once in pretty benign conditions when the keel mechanism failed. I'm very dubious about Speed Dream and some of the claims that Vlad has made but I guess time will tell.

To keep things in perspective the 24 hr crewed record for the fastest monohull (2008) is the equal (slightly faster) than a multihull from 13 years ago.

fastest 24 hour crewed monohull record
2008 "Ericsson 4" 70ft, Torben Grael BRA, 596.6nm, 24.85kts

crewed multihull record from 1999
1999 "PlayStation" 105ft Cat , Steve Fossett, USA, 580.23nm. 24.18kts

the new 24 hour multi record holder
2009 "Banque Populaire 5 131 ft Tri, Pascal Bidegorry FRA, 908.2nm 37.84 kts

Thats a good perspective, Corley but no one has yet built a ocean racing monohull using foil technology to the nth degree like some multis do. When that happens it will be a whole new ballgame-I think. Again, the Moth beats every multihull under 20' and Aussie 18's as well. That technology can be scaled up........

I've often wondered if you ignored the class minimum weight for the A class catamaran and just built for absolute minimum weight whether it could be faster than a moth. I guess its not going to happen because a)It would be expensive and b)the boat could not be raced with other A's.

The moth achieves its best performance in a relatively limited range of wind and seastates, throw in more or less wind thans optimal and a bit of chop and all of a sudden they are not doing too well. I'd love to see a genuinely scaled up moth and how it performed.
