65 ft sailing cat

I live and work in Bali and want to build a sailing catamaran 65ft or bigger and looking for suggestions as to what plans I should look for. I am in the construction game and have a number of experienced and skillful carpenters as well as local boat craftsmen who run a few power boats we have currently chartering in Bali. Construction timber and glass.

Hi Mark, welcome aboard

For starters, what do you want to do with such a big cat? Is this a personal boat for crossing oceans? Or will it be a charter yacht for taking tourists out among the islands? Or maybe it's a cargo boat to get your workers and their supplies out to remote job sites?

Are you after the ultimate in luxury, or does a simpler lifestyle beckon? Do you want this boat to be insanely fast, or is it OK to sacrifice some performance in favour of space and comfort? Are you looking to keep things simple and inexpensive, or does the construction budget rival an investment banker's bailout bonus? Do you have a place to build it?

As you can see, there are a lot of questions- some of them difficult ones- that must be analyzed and understood before meaningful suggestions can be made regarding where to look and who to talk to.

We have plenty of carpenters/cabinet makers who currently work on our timber home projects. We have access to waterside land in Benoa harbour for building. Ideally this cat would cater to 30-40 day trippers but would have nice accommodation below decks for private charter. Speed ideally between 12 - 14 knots if needed. We would like to use outboards. We are just after advice on plans that would be suited to skilled carpenters rather than boatbuilders if that is possible and the simpler the better.

Cat Project in Bali

I have a design I would like to recommend to you in private at first. It is not on my website at this time.

It is a specifically designed for epoxy wood construction that would be more ideal for your location of build.

I do think you have to make a more specific choice as to whether you are seeking a charter vessel 'cattle boat' or a semi-private vessel. There's just too big a difference between the two.

I'd also be interested in what sort of 'timber home projects' you are building. Are they Bali style or very western versions? I'm moving to Thailand this next year, and had a few crazy notions about a Thai or Bali style houseboat (in fact I think I started a subject thread on this notion somewhere in this forum...have to look for it)

Brian - just interested - have any of Your designs ever been built? There is no info on the web... If not, isn't it too risky to start from 65-footer and convince someone to build it?

Construction workers will build you a poor boat, probably unsafe. At the very least hire a shipwright to run the job.

This is not my design, but rather another designer's vessel I am representing. At this stage of my life I am more of a consultant than a primary designer.

There is a lot of manual labor in building a boat that can be handled by good construction workers. This is particularly true with epoxy-wood saturation construction, rather than alum or high tech composite construction.

Of course in any such project you want good supervision.

Realistic budget for 65' project built in Asia is about 700,000 USD plus extras such as electronics, luxury finishing...

We have developed J60 design that is 60-footer. It was featured in last issue of Australian Multihull. The boat is designed as live sailing cat aboard for tropics.

This is budget for J60 from one of builders, with minimum set of equipment but including engines, rig, hatches.

This one here?

Seems quite reasonable if , as you say, it is ready to go

Why do all/most thai builders seem to have albatross marine designs?

Maybe becasue we design in locally available materials, provide on-site supervision and drawings in Thai language? Also designs are quite detailed (ready to apply for CE certification) and reasonably priced.

To be correct, we do not work with all builders in TH, but with those capable to build and deliver boats. We do not work with scam 'yards'! At present, we deal with only 5 builders in TH and about 15 abroad. Some builders buy kits or designs abroad - their choice

Scam yards?

More info please as I do wish to bring my vessel up (click avatar) for finishing touches and do not wish to go to these scam yards.
