SF Wins Bid for AC 34

It's official. San Francisco will be the host City for the 34 edition of the America's Cup. After a very detailed and exhaustive negotiation, our venue team and the City of San Francisco have come to terms with a program that should make this 34th edition of the Cup the most spectacular to date.

Dates for the event are tentatively set for summer of 2013 for the Challenger/Defender series and early fall for the America's Cup Defense series.

The Board of Directors and our negotiating team would like to thank all of our members for their long standing support and patience as we carefully worked out the details of this host city agreement. As one can imagine, this was not a simple affair and has been called the most complex agreement in the Cups long history.

That said, we, the Golden Gate Yacht Club, have much to do and look forward to in the coming weeks and months in the dial-up to the most anticipated AC event.

Don't get me wrong, I love multihulls (well, all boats) but I don't think they should be used for this sort of one on one match racing.
The Cup needs to get back to a one design monohull or rating rule formula and a price limit has to be set on hull construction and sail wardrobes. Something in the region of being affordable for a small syndicate, say $1million US? A rule that would make the skills of the competitors more important than 500 hours in a test tank.
Only then will we truly see the best of the world's sailors being able to compete equally in this race, not those who can afford to charge enough through reputation to be paid professionally.
Can you imagine 50-60 yachts competing in eliminations for the Cup? would be nicer than the select few that turn up, made of unobtanium and paid for by billion dollar corporations.......as far as I'm concerned, the last interesting America's cup was off Fremantle.

Who said the AC was about "Match Racing". That is just something that sort of crept in over the years.
The original contest was for the fastest boat.

Together, San Francisco and the ORACLE Racing Team have seized a tremendous opportunity to showcase sailing in the magnificent amphitheater of San Francisco Bay, provide jobs and a more than $1 billion boost to our City’s economy and transform the America’s Cup experience. The strength of San Francisco’s bid and the enormous benefits it will provide to the City and to the team are the result of months of hard work, negotiations and overwhelming support from throughout the City and State. Sixth Entry Confirmed For 34th America's Cup
America's Cup event organizers have confirmed the sixth entry for the 34th America's Cup in 2013. The official announcement by the team is expected soon.

"What a great way to start off the new year, with our official host city San Francisco in place and now the announcement of our sixth entry," said Iain Murray, Regatta Director for the 34th America's Cup and CEO of America's Cup Race Management (ACRM). "I'm looking forward to having more good news to share, with the launch of the first AC45 later this month."

This sixth entry joins previously announced challenges from Italy (Mascalzone Latino), France (ALEPH), and Sweden (Artemis Racing). A fourth challenger has been accepted but has yet to disclose any details of its entry, while ORACLE RACING from the United States has been accepted as a defender candidate by the Golden Gate Yacht Club.

The entry process and validation procedures are set out in the America's Cup Rules and can be found at www.americascup.com

The entry period for the 34th America's Cup runs November 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011.

* Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom has been named Ambassador at Large for the 34th America's Cup.

"Gavin Newsom was the driving force behind the 34th America's Cup coming to San Francisco," said Russell Coutts, CEO, ORACLE RACING, the team owned by Larry Ellison that won the Cup for San Francisco's Golden Gate Yacht Club in February 2010. "We expect the next America's Cup to attract fans from around the world and Lieutenant Governor Newsom will help ensure that the Bay Area will be presented in the best possible way."

As the first-ever Ambassador at Large for the America's Cup, Newsom will support the America's Cup Event Authority in its efforts to create a superior fan and participant experience both on and off the water.
