New Power for Finnsailer 29

First Post - so, hello to anyone reading this, I'm not that used to forums, so if you reply please type slowly, thanks.

Just about to order a new power unit for my Finnsailer 29.

The old engine is a Volvo MD3B 36hp, my choice of new inboard is a Beta Marine (Jabota)... either the 35hp at 3500 revs or 37hp at 2700 revs. Both will fit.

I assume the 37hp at lower revs is the one to go for (quieter and more power) unless someone knows better!

Anyone have experience of this engine swap on a Finnsailer?

Anyone want to shout STOP you're making a mistake! Before I order?

Thanks

Rich

Fellow Finnsailer 29 Owner

I'm based in the USA and am partial to Yanmar technology when it comes to engines. Clearly the other 'Japanese' brands are as good or better. The direction of rotation can be an issue. Volvo engines seem out of date, heavy, and very expensive - especially the parts.

I just bought a neglected, but sound, Finnsailer 29. She has a Perkins 4-108 engine and I just got it started today after a four year 'sleep' shall we say. I used fresh diesel fuel and new filters. Bleed all the lines and the injection pump thoroughly and, to my utter amazement, the engine started right up. Seems to run at the right temp and has good oil pressure so I'm a very happy person right now. Transmission worked too, but I could hear the 'clatter' of a dampner plate that has some of the springs missing. This is a common issue with the Perkins engine.

I intend to take the boat from Clearwater, Florida where I purchased her to Demopolis, Alabama where I can have her hauled and get busy with the refit.

I would be very interested in sharing information on these boats as there is very little literature available.

Regards,

Steve Lesak
