| Looks like we're all in the same age bracket, as for my better half she's some 5 yrs. younger but most of her moms side live to over 100. Her aunt was the second oldest woman in the world before she checked out at 114 yrs. Needless to say I carry no life insurance on her. ![]() |

| Hi Brian Eiland, My feelings are very biased and personal opinion for my needs and aspirations:- - A "fly-bridge" is unnecessary, as is an open aft deck... Both places are for those wishing to acquire some form of cancer, or sunburn... Hard-top shade is necessary in the tropics for comfort... - As a motor-sailor, a boom-less main - - as older folk do not duck so readily when it swings "unexpectedly" - An easy ability to launch and retrieve the dingy and its contents from a successful foraging trip ashore (a prized bunch of bananas is very heavy)... - Must be able to happily sit upright on a friendly sandbar... - Have a shallow draft to venture up creeks and explore (gunkholing)...

| Brian --thats one nice craft- just enough of old school design to keep it salty and nautical looking which I feel has a .niche market. Too many modern vessels look like space ships. Masalai makes some points but like all craft they can be modified to suit the particular market. I.E. the flying bridge can be a bolt on modular unit. Most long distance blue water ocean cruising customers would possibly go without it however most coastal and down on the Islands boys would be much in favour. I'm even more old school in that I like alot of William Hanns designs as a base to work from although I lean more to a true 50/50 or greater sail to motor ratio. | I believe in 100% motorsailing. Not 50/50 either or! ![]() I'm stiching an inverted black triangle on my working jib. When the jib is hoisted, so is my motorsailing dayshape. ![]() I want to be able to get home under sail alone in case of breakdown, and I'll motor without sails in harbor around other yachts, but passage making will always be under both sail and motor.

| Bob Oram Motorsailors Hi everyone, been lurking a while and thought I would post a couple of links to two motorsailor designs from Bob Oram (10m and a 12m), which due to his retirement are probably not available any more. I think for the Queensland coast and tropics they are a great thing. Bob is a real great guy, very generous of his time when I wrote to him about his designs and what was suitable for us. I cant wait to see his "12m Slim" which he is meant to be building for his retirement. (I was considering his 10m Slim design at one point then I found these). Having read everything I can get my hands on about headsail / aft mast rigs (including all of your threads and site Brian) I can't but agree that for a motorsailing rig (or cruising sailboat for that matter) it has to be a sensible choice if well executed, particularly for the novice like me. Anyway enjoy, I am off to dream about how to build one of these! regards to all.. |

| Hi flagg, Have you seen the 32ft version, 'WilPower', is built but not yet complete over in the canals at Bribie... Mine, 'CNO', is a 39C, on the mainland side of Pumicestone passage... also without mast... Do not dream too long as procrastination leads to deferment and all of a sudden an opportunity has been missed... The Queensland distance education process/system is renown and well regarded and an excellent opportunity for cruising families to give a well rounded international standard of education to their children... DO IT NOW... BUILD and GO CRUISING before your "comfort zone" becomes a trap and makes it very difficult to leave....

| HI Mas, I did look at the Upolo? design but it is a power only not a motor sailor as I understand. The Cape Upstart is the 10m Motor Sailor which is related more to the sailing "slim" designs from Bob. Mate I hear you about procrastination, however I have a plan and am slowly ticking off the to-do-list of loose ends/unfinished projects (house improvements, motorbike rebuilds etc.) Once I can be focussed then I will get serious about this building thing, not for another year before I am where I need to be. | Doug's "WilPower" was supposed to have a mast too - It was, (as far as I am aware), in his plans... I am travelling the same road as you - - diligently ticking off the "todo" list - - My constraint is money - as income now is around $500/fortnight... Mine was the first 'aft-mast', - hitch-hiker rig (twin Genoa), - and non 'glass-oven' bridge-deck 'saloon' - - - the origin was 39C ...
